In tank pump
Hi
I have just bought a new Bosch in tank pump as mine is whining like a banshee. My car also came with a spare pump and I'm struggling to work out how it goes together. The small silver pump looks like it should go in the black plastic sleeve but I cant get it to go in. I ordered the new Bosch one as I thought it would be better than fitting a second hand one that could fail again. Trouble is the Bosch one is much bigger and definitely wont fit in the plastic sleeve. Having said all that I don't know what my pump is like as I haven't removed it yet. See attached pictures pump 1.JPG pump 2.JPG pump 3.JPG pump 5.JPG

You really need to know the part number of your original pump in order to source the right replacement. Volvo used several different in-tank pumps and they were different dimensions.
The most fundamental difference was up to about 1994 the 940 had two fuel pumps. A small in-tank pump served as a lift pump to supply fuel to a main pump located in a carrier under the car near the fuel filter. Later cars used a single, more powerful in-tank pump. If yours is a later car it is possible you have the right pump for your car but your spare sender unit is from an earlier car where the in-tank pump was a different beast altogether. |

Oh so much fun ahead of you trying to wiggle it out of the tank.

I can send you the little clamp for the the pump as it defo fitted the bosch pump i sent you. Thats the only difference i can see on your pictures. Also where your pump slides up & down you want some string or small rope tied to that in such a way that you can pull the string to compress your pump assemply. That way when you insert it back into the tank & rotate it you can loosen the string & the sping loaded pump will slide back into position. Its a hard job but nimble fingers & lots of trying it will go in. Also my car was a single in tank pump. So you should be ok as yours is the same year as well.

Like Luke suggests, prepare for your Volvo Gynaecology Practical!
It's a fiddle getting the pump out and a worse one to get it back in, sometimes you're lucky and it just slips back in without a hitch but mostly you have to jiggle it a bit. It's also spring loaded so it sits firmly in the bottom of the tank, in between baffles that are in place and help locate it. Also invest the £11 or thereabouts on a new tank seal for when you fit the new pump. I'll try and find the part number later but it's still a stock item at Volvo so should be easily obtained. It's not worth skimping on it, the car will stink of petrol and more than £11 worth of petrol will evaporate past an old, re-used seal. Been there, done that, T-shirt, MoT failure etc! If you're of a certain age, you'll remember Boss Hogg from the original Dukes of Hazzard tv series - my MoT tester bears a striking resemblance to him and my tank dripped petrol on his head.

This is the clamp that was on my fuel assembly that held the pump in place. If yours is any different once removed from your car i can send this one up.

Just as well I didn't go with the spare pump that came with the car as I would've been right up the proverbial creek
