I don't know how Volvo's DMS works but yesterday I got a call from my dealer wanting to book my V40 in for annual service - even though they did it last October.... They then claimed that they did not service the car but
performed an MOT on the 2nd November.... it was MOT'd then but by my friendly local garage - not a Volvo dealer.

I suspect a third party is doing the calls for them based on half the information.

Still not as bad as VW - my wife has a Golf coming up to 1 year old in Feb and we've had 3 calls now from the VW dealer insistent that we book it in for it's MOT before 2nd Feb or we will be breaking the law...

It would be great to have a Volvo source for this downwardly revised mileage that could be quoted. Talking to a Volvo dealer yesterday they didn't have a clue about the cambelt change interval and actually suggested that it wasn't due until sometime AFTER 108k miles (so maybe they still work to the original 144k mile change?)... I can hardly disagree on the grounds that someone on a web site says otherwise (even though I do believe you!).

My car did a high mileage in its original life as a leasehire vehicle, so needed three services in the first two years... now on annual services, but obviously still 'one ahead' of what might be expected.

At 82k miles I'm happy to NOT have a cambelt change included in the upcoming service number 6 next week, in fact I don't expect to reach 90k miles by service 7. And by then I'll be doing my own servicing, including the cambelt change (even if I have to buy my own VIDA/DiCE).
you were not talking to a dealer , you were talking to an individual who works there , whether he or she was good or poor or qualified to answer your question remains unknown .. It was certainly their duty to check up and find the answer for you though ....

Thanks for the responses all, but i do find it worrying that noone at other dealers seems to be giving consistent advice / be fully aware of the changes made by Volvo. I for one haven't always used main dealers for all services for the different Volvo's i've owned over the years but how on earth are owners meant to know about any such change if Volvo hasn't put out various communications via different media to catch those people who don't use main dealers for each service....and even if they do it sounds like you're lucky if they're clued up on any such changes!

Sounds like i probably need to bite the bullet and get all the work done, although i'd planned to save up towards this being such an expensive job.

Any other recommendations / prices of indy's or main dealers who could do the work at a decent price are welcomed

Cheaper to change a cam belt than the engine, any concerns change it any ways.
If your car was sold to me I'd have changed.

Doesn't really answer the question of how often it should be changed!

My 5 year service was last August, & did not have the belt, etc, done

Any idea *when* this changed? Seems to contradict scbamber's experience? (must admit I thought it was 6 years or just over 100k miles, whichever comes first.

eg, *should* my 5 year service last August have had this done?

This year will obviously be my 6 years up, but if your comment is accurate, & my miles will be under 85k, I will NOT need it doing yet.
I can check with my dealer (happen to be sat here for the recall work right now, as it happens....)

It's 90000 miles or 10 years which ever comes first Since Last may . It may or may not coincide with a service . Volvo servicing is customisable to suit your circumstances now .

Thanks Clan!

Indeed, the Volvo dealer confirmed that 90k miles for us, which would likely be the 7th service (assuming I hold on to Stormy....which is highly likely!).

Very surprised to see you get that done at the 5th service, scbamber - you say your miles were only 45k - are you *certain* it was done? Sounds very odd for a dealer to do that sort of thing so out of kilter with requirements!

Cost for the belt change was quoted at around £480 inc.

I'm sure I could get that at least £100 cheaper at the indy dealer (who are also very good), but if I do decide to strap in for the long term ownership with this beauty, I may bite the bullet and continue to use the main dealer.
They are pretty decent, & should any future need for goodwill payments on anything (as yet unforeseen!), that would help add weight to my cause....

Yes, I am absolutely certain. The paper invoice says "Carry out 90k service incl Aux belt and tensioner". The aux belt is very obviously brand new and a Volvo original, and the tensioner and the two bolts are similarly brand new. My mileage is 45k.

No wonder I signed on for 3 years' further servicing, including any software upgrades, the next three MOTs, and courtesy car for each service. The plan is the dealer's plan (ie not a Volvo plan), underwritten, contractual and can be passed on to cover another car bought from the dealer. The cost is set at today's prices so won't rise, and is paid in monthly instalments over 30 months to cover the 36 months. It is almost £200 less than their current servicing prices and MOT prices (I checked), and their charges can only rise. The dealer has always been helpful and straightforward.
