Default DPF/oil woes

Help/advice please. I've a 57 plate V70 with D5 engine using approx. 4lts oil every 1K miles. The "soot filter full" sign is on almost permanently and the DPF doesn't regenerate. There is no oil under the car where it's parked so my thoughts are that the engine is burning the oil with the resultant muck going down the exhaust and so causing the DPF woes. Am I being naïve in thinking that the oil can only get to the combustion chambers/cylinders by only one of 3 ways, being; 1) turbo seals, 2) valve stem seals/guides, 3) piston rings? I'm considering taking off the cylinder head to address nos; 2 & 3 as the turbo has supposedly been done (is there any way of proving/disproving this?) and would greatly appreciate any input/thoughts.

Should have plenty of miles left (assuming some motorway mileage). For a petrol engine, excessive oil consumption can sometimes be related to engine breathing issues, generally but not always accompanied by a smoky exhaust.

I have no experience of dealing with diesel engine breathing issues, one thread here https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=85062

It's bizarre how diesels used to be recommended for urban use, but in 2017 that can be a death knell.
