Slipped Timing Belt - Replace Head?
Hi Folks,
Well as of today I now have 2 broken V70's D5 in my garage One was involved in an accident a few weeks back and is a write off, and the second purchased by a gentleman who had the misfortune to have a timing belt slip after the auxilary belt got caught up in it. Now my intention was to make up 1 working car from the parts of my old one (engine is fine in that). I was planning to do a complete engine swap but the new V70 I just bought has recent flywheel and gearbox work so seems a pain to swap everything over, wondered if I could get away with just swapping the head from my running engine? This new car does start up and idle's ok, but it will not rev, which seems to me the valves have been bent, he assured me the timing belt had been recently replaced and re-set hoping that he would have got away without any engine damage but that does not appear to be the case. Assuming the timing is set correctly, I would love to do a a head swap as I think it should be less work for me on my own to complete. Welcome peoples thoughts? |

Hi James,
The head which had the timing belt slip will have incurred damage to the casting were the hydraulic tappets sit. They basically break out of the casting usually every one. If you find one side is OK usually the exhaust side then likely the exhaust cam sprocket has rotated around the cam instead. I have a contact in Poland who can repair both the heads and the cam shaft, he also advertises on eBay. The casting number is printed on the back of the head you will need a mirror to read it as long as these match up your good for a swap. The pistons are rarely damaged or the valves for that matter. Much easier to swap a head than the engine. The engine will still run albeit not rev up properly even with every single hydraulic tappet housing broken. Not recommended though as there is a ton of broken bits of aluminium casting floating around in the head. You will need a new head gasket and a set of stretch head bolts. If you get into trouble I am just up the road from you south of Tewkesbury, Bradford Motor Co. regards Ben Last edited by MissSpentYouth; Oct 23rd, 2017 at 22:03. |

Thanks Ben, I will be looking to whip the head off shortly to check what the damage is. I will also check timing first to make sure that's not off. I would be really pleased to get away with a head swap and without hoisting the engine out.

Don't forget to put some sealant under the cam shaft end caps otherwise you will land up with an oil leak down the sides.
The injectors come out much easier on a hot engine, though I wouldn't run the one with the damaged head for fear of bits of ally going round the engine regards Ben |

It may be worth dropping the sump pan to clean the mesh screen on the oil pump collector if there are many small fragments of chewed up cast alloy
I think the valves run vetically so the pistons hit IN LINE with the valve, |

Well I managed to get some time to look at this finally yesterday. First thing I did was check if the new belt had been put on correctly by the previous owner, turns out it was not...the belt was actually set to incorrect timing marks! I got a bit excited thinking that a reset of the timing may breath life back into the old girl again, but it was not too be.
Fired up lovely and idle is fine, but would not rev past 2k rpm, so I suspect unless there is another miscellaneous error the head is shot. Need to find a few hours to take it off an confirm once and for all. Missus not happy have 2 non-operational Volvo's on the drive |

The chap has all the parts he needs other than the gasket and stretch bolts, and the ability and enthusiasm to do the work himself, why on earth would it be scrap?

Agree with Tomoose. The op has a spares car-so no expense other than gaskets-and the way I read it has the skills/enthusiasm to do the work himself-so again no expense other than his own time-so why scrap an otherwise[presumably]sound car?

Because you can get running vehicles, especially Euro 3's for a price that makes fixing the serious cases not worth the time and effort.
