D5 swirl flap linkage
Getting round to investigating an oil leak on our V70 D5 engine. It is weeping from the swirl flap port. The linkage arm is missing.
1) is the oil leak related to the missing swirl arm? 2) fitting a new arm, is this just a matter of clipping it over the ball joints either end or more involved? 3) approx price of an arm. Thanks

The usual reason the arm is missing is beacuse the ball joint claws in the female side of the quadrant break and the arm falls off.
There is a repair from volvo where you drill a small hole in the quadrant and use a pin to go through the female side and the male ball in the arm such that they are pulled together. The arm and repair pin are cheap, circa £10 or so. However, as I've discovered, the quadrant resonates with the engine and rattles around till it breaks. I've got a very wonky quadrant and the beigingings of an oil leak from the area. Only fix is to pull the injectors (£20 each for a must have fitting kit, plus officially at least, another £140 or so for 5 pipes) and then the rocker cover to gain access to the quadrant (£120 with a link arm). You'll also need some antifreeze. Note you can save antifreeze when you drain it, but it should be changed every three years or so and rarely does that happen. Whilst it will always prevent freezing whilst it is in the correct concentration, its corrosion inhibition properties do die off with age. Ask me how I know.... |

I had this happen on my xc90 d5.
£320 to my indi Volvo specialist cured all and made it feel like a new car.....well worth doing Dont forget you will also need a new cover gasket and dont forget new copper washers for reseat of the injectors when they go back in.

Sorry to bring an old thread back but I have the same issue.
Just purchased a v70 D5 and upon inspection I noticed this problem. Knocked the price down accordingly. So, my arm is just hanging and the plastic clip part that is attached to the underneath of the rocker cover is still there but I pushed it in and its stayed there now. The car drives fine (if a little noisy) but Im unsure if this is something that will defo need addressing. There is also a build up of oil around the area. I will attempt the Volvo arm fix option and see what happens. As for the oil, is that usually a seal? Thanks |

I have same issue with my 2008 euro4 2.4d 5244t5 engine. Have put arm back on as fell off from under rocker cover area but I also have oil around this area. The oil I assumed when I first noticed it seems to be coming from the rocker box seal and down onto the arm area. Does the rocker box seal also seal the swirl flap arm in top of engine or are there o rings of some sort. The oil upon further inspection actually looks like it could be coming from the sensor on the end of the fuel rail just behind the other end of the swirl arm. Is this possible does oil flow thru the rail. Apologies if not used correct terms but I am sure members will understand where and what items I am talking about.

Go to a good indie and get the proper repair with gasket etc...the car feels like new afterwards and pulls like a train ...very responsive.

Replaced my arm about 2 years ago when it failed and fell off and would no longer secure. Reset with VIDA and great. It's fallen off again (ball joint claws worn away) and also quite an oil leak in that area. Am I understand from this post that fitting a new arm is not the solution and the whole rocker cover needs to come off? The latter is not for my DIY skills
