Default 2005 XC70 help please

Hi
I was wondering if anyone could suggest the best way forward to resolve the following issues I have with my D5 XC70?
The following messages have illuminated: 'ABS/Anti-Skid Service Required' and 'Anti-Skid Service Required' (the former coincides with the orange 'abs' light in the lower right section of the instrument cluster) on my dash and would like to get the issues resolved as (financially) painlessly as possible. I have been trying to understand the VIDA/DICE thing and reluctor rings etc, but honestly feel a bit bombarded with all of the information. The way I understand options I have currently are:
1. Take it to a main dealer, get them to read the codes with the 'right' tools and software, get them to fix the issue and drive away (expensive!).
2. Buy a laptop that someone has already installed VIDA on and by a DICE unit (is that right?) and try and read the issue for myself; get it booked in with a local mechanic to undertake the work.
3. Take a punt and just buy a reluctor ring (how many are there on the vehicle?), take it to a garage and get them to fit it/them and hope for the best

Any thoughts welcome!
Thank you in advance

In the absence of a diagnostic tool which can read the brake module, start by doing this.
On an XC, I'm guessing the rear shafts will have rings on too as opposed to the rings being built into the rear hub bearing assembly like on a 2WD..... I would need to check Vida to be sure though.

Thanks for your reply.
I had a look at the driveshaft nuts earlier today and both (fronts)seemed to be OK, although I admittedly didn't check based on a specific torque. Is there anywhere I could find the appropriate value, or if the nuts are loose enough to cause an issue with the abs is it obvious?

The general figure is 35Nm+90° or 50Nm.
Once again for an XC, I'd need to check.

Your first proposition may not be accurate. Just don't expect the main dealer to indeed fix the issue. With this kind of trouble plenty of customers walk from the main dealer with the same issue minus the money. Reluctor rings are easy check, be sure to jack the car securely on jack stands and turn the wheel around. If that checks fine, there are other things to look at such as the CEM

Re. using the main dealer, that's one of my concerns!
If the CEM is potentially at fault however, that would also need a decent diagnostic tool to properly identify the issue. This leaves me in pretty much the same place (in terms of not being in a position to confidently diagnose problems)

Most independent Volvo specialists will be able to read the car codes correctly, but chances are it's a cracked ring causing errors in reading.
That's a very common fault so most likely and not all that expensive to have fixed
Good luck

Thank you.
Would you have any idea on the labour to replace an ABS ring?

Roughly 1 hour so final cost depends on the labour rate and where they source the parts.
I've replaced a few now and that's what it takes me on my drive so a garage with a lift shouldn't be any worse than that.
I used this company and the rings were less than £2 each from their eBay shop.

Thanks so much for your help. It's good to have something to work from.
Can I ask if you managed to find anything out regarding the number of rings an XC has?

Thanks
