Default Gearchange problem

When I change into fifth and sixth now there is nothing stopping me pushing the gear lever right over to the right. For example, in fourth and want to change up to fifth, the gear lever used to stop just below fifth but now carries on beyond the fifth gear position to a point over reverse. I have accidentally selected reverse a couple of times now instead of sixth which is a little worrying! Kind of hard to explain but hopefully you get what I am talking about.

So is it the gear change selector at fault? Can this be fixed easily or does it need replacement? Car is going in for a service shortly but I would like to give my mechanic an idea of what might be wrong and if necessary supply him with the correct part.

There is an electrical solenoid unit below the gear lever boot that stops that happening. If its that that is faulty then should be a quick and cheap fix....

Finally got time to check this out again. According to the handbook fuse 21 in drivers footwell controls this. Couldn't find 21 as I am not a contortionist (whoever decided to stick a fusebox up in there needs a good kick up the rear) so I just pulled all 10 amp fuses out, checked they weren't blown then stuck them back in again. Gearchange back to normal!
