Default (DIM) dash repair

My Volvo V40 has problems with the total km (mileage) indicator, i see only dashes. The value is stored in the dash and not in the ecu.
Changing the dash will cause problems with the real km value.
I hope someone has expierence in repairing the dash.
I have allready got it out of the car and checked for dry soldering joints but everythings looks all right. I have read, that the value is stored in eeprom and it would be helpfull to have a layout where the parts are located. Important is also where i can connect the 12 V so that i can look at it outside the car.

The car is a V40 1999 1.6

It's probably worth checking the strip that connect the board to the lcd display. I'm talking from what I have seen in other cars, and sometimes that strip tends to loose it's connectivity.

Don't know to cluster on the Volvo but could be something to check

sorry to hear that you are having troubles with your dash, but i feel it might just be easier to replace the cluster, from what i gather the chips etc are difficult to replace, and if your milage/KM's are showing as dashes the EPROM would most likely need to replaced regardless, in which case you have lost the values stored anyway.

Default Has someone a layout where is the eprom located.

I am used to work with electronic parts, please can someone show me where i can find the mentioned eprom.
Maybe a picture taken from the board.
The unit has partnumber 30857573/1 prod. date 16-2-2000.
I have located two chips but they aren't the eprom.
NEC 78064GF for emergency running.
ELMOS 10019A located near the km indicator, but i don't know the function.

I am not sure if he repairs the V40 dashes - but I had the common problem of my message information display on my 2002 V70 showing garbage - dashes and flickering etc. I sent it to Lukas at Volvodiagnostics.com - and I gotta say he is excellent !!
HE charges £60 to repair and return the unit to you in the same day !
I removed the dash cluster, stuck it in an old Amazon box with bubble wrap, sent it to him. He received it and returned it using guaranteed next day delivery ! HE also guarantees his work !
He's spot-on ! Good communication - I cant recommend enough !

So I'm really happy that my car can now intelligably inform me that I have 2 problems with the engine ! :-(
Give him a shout:

Default Dim completely disassembled.

I do want to find the exact problem, i am convinced yet the dim module is not the couse for the dashes on the total km display.
I have thoroughly examend the components on the board of the dim, there is no eprom.
Elmos 10019A is the OBD chip for errordiagnose.
UPD78064GF is a single chip 8 bit microcomputer, but has no external memory for the storage of the total km (total mileage). Therefore it must be in another part of the car.
The daycount km is functioning. All other components are all right and displaying correct.
Has someone discovered were the total km (mileage) is stored?

But if you replace the instrument cluster on the X40 car, the new mileage is displayed......

Default exchanging the DIM is causing false mileage information

I can exchange the DIM, but there are a lot of simular DIM's but they have a number that differs and i don't know if that matches with the car.
The next problem is that the km doesn't match the existing DIM
For the Dutch MOT it is mandatory that the display shows the real km/mileage.
If there is a big difference it is a problem.
Therefore i can change the DIM but need to adjust the km/mileage to the real value 180.000 km.
How can i change that????

Not sure if you can. And if it can be done, it would only be at the dealers

If those are the only "serious" chips on board, then the mileage might be stored in UPD's internal ROM memory - in variables in memory cells, next to the program.
Datasheet documentation is relatively poor documented about ROM access from program, but most modern chips are offering FLASH memory for program and some internal EEPROM for non-volatile variables that need to be stored.
