Default Erratic fuel gauge

Hi all,

While I'm driving along my fuel gauge is very erratic, the needle is constantly flickering around!
I'm guessing the movement of the car is causing the float that sends a message to the dial to bob around in the tank? Is this just part of the joys of owning an Amazon or is it a fixable fault?

Many thanks in advance
Bryn

Bryn;

Gauge is undampened, so some bouncing of the Needle is typical as the Float in Tank moves with driving. Super-quick movements of the Needle (in either direction) are indicative of a damaged resistive element in the Sender.

Many thanks for the info Ron,
I think I'll keep an eye on things and try to determine what is typical and what might be considered damage.

The wiper on the resistive element in the tank float assembly may have developed some dirty spots which are resulting in intermittent contact affecting the gauge operation. The undamped nature of the gauge makes this obvious. If you remove the sender from the tank you may be able to clean the wiper / resistor element and restore operation. This requires disassembly of the sender and the housing does not come apart easily. If it were me and I had gone to the effort of removing the sender I would just put a new one in. They are available for a reasonable price

For a little more money you can get them in stainless steel

If you attempt to rehabilitate your existing sender be sure to fit a new gasket in the sender opening in the tank.
