Default Volvo 960 fuel pump retrofit/repair

Hi,

I'm new here: I live in Santiago de Chile and I've just bought a 1993 Volvo 960 Estate with 3.0 Liter 24 valve engine (US version), code B6304S.

The fuel pump (in-tank) is dead, eaten by corrosion. I want to retrofit it with a generic pump but I couldn't find any info about it like fuel pressure or L/hour.

The fuel sender unit is exactly like this one: https://www.volvoclub.org.uk/faq/Fue...eplacement.htm

Anyone knows the fuel pump specs?

Thanks in advance!

Ignacio

I'm not sure what pump a 960 uses but if you Google the Bosch part number you should be able to find the information and Bosch make pumps to suit older cars still so you can cross reference the number to find the modern equivalent.

The main thing you need to determine is whether your car has one or two fuel pumps. 1993 will probably have two, meaning your high-pressure main fuel pump is in a cradle by the fuel filter under the car and the in-tank pump is a low pressure lift pump designed to feed fuel to the main pump.

In this set-up the lift pump will operate at somewhere between 3psi and 7psi as against the 42psi of the main pump.

For simplicity replacing it try to find one the same physical dimensions and with the same electrical connections as the original. Don’t try bench testing them. They are designed to run immersed in fuel.

1993 would be a low pressure lift pump in the tank.

These pumps have been very reliable https://www.classicswede.org/shop/in-tank-lift-pump
