Somehow water is getting in the fuel then (at the risk of stating the obvious!) but as you presumably haven't driven it anywhere recently, you need to find out how it's getting in there!

In the filler aperture, there's a small hole designed to drain water from around the filler cap. I use a long thin cable tie to keep mine clear but you could also use some thick strimmer line or similar. Make sure yours is clear then try pouring some water into it and make sure it runs out the bottom of the car. If it disappears but doesn't go on the floor, you need to find out where it's going. I take it you have the proper Volvo fuel cap on it?

Ah I removed the filler 'boot' a while back so there is no way water can get in now. Cap needs a new seal. What we think is sadly we must have left a pocket of water in a baffle or something and when I drove around the yard and jacked the other way, boom, ruined again. Just been out for a new fuel filter and 2 gallons of super to do it again. Gnrrr. On the upside the new fuel reg finally arrived in the post.

The filler boot is also part of how the filler neck mounts and really needs to be there. Get yourself a new cap from Volvo (i've tried the aftermarket ones, they're useless!) to eliminate that as a possibility of how water is getting in.

That "P" clamp round the filler pipe onto the chssis member is the only other mounting point for the filler - can't really count the hose between the filler and tank as a mounting as it's not strong enough. The grommet through the bulkhead at the back of the spare wheel well for the filler isn't a mount either, just a guide.

Don't worry it's removal is a temporary measure, there's a lot of bits to go back on this car once it gets reliably running

I think you can get new rubber o-rings for the caps too if memory serves correct, I also have a spare Volvo one but it doesn't have key so may cull the seal of that (when I can find it....)

Not enough hours in the day to play with cars and do my real job.

Well a big thank you to the ever useless Euro Car Parts who supplied me the wrong handbrake cable and won't refund as it's over a month. They don't/won't recognise this model has two variants for the short cable - which I know now! They supplied 755mm and I need the 910mm. Local factor has ordered but it won't be until after the bank hol. Had a mate strip it all down to fit it. Now back together with still no handbrake.

No, your engine management light is on. When did it come on, does it go off if you switch off and restart and have you read the codes?

It only came on today, never before. Ignition on pulled fuse 1, replaced and it went away

The engine seems to be running pretty smooth but it's definitely "futting" at the exhaust. Mechanic thinks it is a matter of time to recover from the whole water disaster. Running with a couple gallons of super then will fill again with fresh.

You leave the keys well away from the ignition while pulling fuse #1!!!!! Likely to damage the ECU if you have the ignition on and pull fuse #1!!!

Add about a litre of meths to those 2 gallons of super unleaded, should clear any remaining condensation but all red blocks have an occasional "Fut" on the tailpipe, a slightly off-beat idle so you won't ever get a perfectly smooth idle on any red block. You might get close but you'll still have that occasional off-beat thing.

It was advice I found on this forum to pull fuse 1 as a reset

I have some hydro, mechanic I have helping says no way to the meths. He wants good pure super running in it's veins now and nothing more. The fut isn't good, if you take your foot off the idle drops to 500 or worse and it struggles and dies. It does need a new exhaust but isn't blowing that we can find.
