Default Sudden Drop in MPG ??

Hi,

I’ve had my 940 2.0 Turbo for 3 years or so now, no major issue and I always brim the tank and do MPG calculations, since getting it, I get around 25-26 around my usual driving, up to 29+ on holiday long distance cruises.

Last 2 weeks I’ve dropped to 22 for some reason, runs exactly the same, exhaust is mid grey, not sooty. Pulled the plugs and a good colour.

Mmm, other threads suggested thermostat but that was renewed with genuine Volvo one last Spring when I replaced radiator and coolant hoses.

Any pointers would be most appreciated

Cheers
Steve

No leaks Steve, have you?
Air filter or air duct restriction?

Odd one!🤨

Possibly a good shout Andrew, most obvious I suppose, but hadn’t even thought about that cause, will need to don the thermals and have a grovel👍

Cheers
Steve

PS, came across an article yesterday about some nutters in Mapleton, who came up with idea to jump off a bridge on New Years Day into a freezing river…. Apparently now been cancelled the last few years, but just loved the ideas that come out of a pub😀

'Evening, Steve, any possibility that you might have sprung a leak? The one time something very similar happened to my 944 was after I had had it serviced in one of these 'menu' outfits whilst working away from home. Dropped from 29 overall to 25 overnight down to an incorrectly fitted fuel filter.

Do you have a brake binding? Feel your wheels (carefully!) after a run for possible temperature differential. In the same vein, have you got a slow puncture causing drag? Again, feeling each tyre in turn after a run may point to this.

In the unlikely event that you have suddenly and dramatically changed your driving style or relocated to the Welsh mountains or Yorkshire Dales, I think something like this may be behind the increase in fuel consumption.

Good hunting! Regards, John.

Written before seeing the posts above; obviously we were thinking along the same lines ... J.

Jumping into the river Dove is a bloody cold experience anytime, it’s a chilly stream all year round.
It’s a bit like our Shrovetide football game, goals three miles apart, no team size limit.

I will be interested to find what’s causing your mpg problem!🤔

Thank you John, most helpful, and I feel rather a fool not even thinking of a leak possibility. The brake binding is a very good shout as I have had a touch of squeal recently, indeed if weather is not too bad, I was going to do my annual check and make sure slider pins etc were all good, so hopefully that may be the cause👍

Cheers

Hi Mark,
Yet another good suggestion, in the current climate the investigative process has been nada, zilch. but my hunch on t’sofa in front of the fire is that John’s suggestion of brake bind perhaps being the culprit

Should hang my head in shame for not investigating sooner🙁

Procastination is my name

Cheers
