Default XC60 - Oil sensor faulty?

I have a 58 plate 2.4D XC60 with 42K on the clock.

It's been pretty reliable apart from a flurry of recalls earlier in its life.

It was due for a major service recently and having been completely horrified by the ridiculous quote from my main dealer I contacted Halfords Autocentre who have been very good for other things I have needed. They offered a good deal and serviced the car using a very comprehensive check list.

When I got the car back the Coolant warning light came on almost immediately, although that was quickly fixed by topping up.

A day later I got an "Engine System Service Required" warning light and they found a "random" fault code indicating an intermittent fault and reset it. A day later the warning light reappeared. This time they told me that the fault was an Engine Oil sensor fault which was going to cost more than £250 to replace (mostly parts) - There was nothing wrong with the car, just the sensor.

I am struggling to see how this could be the case. The car is 4 years old and looking at other forums it seems that overfilling the oil can cause this type of problem on other models.

Has anyone heard of this problem before and if so, any ideas how to resolve it?

NB The Volvo main dealer wants £110 just to hook it up to the computer before doing anything!

When you say 'they' found a random fault are you referring to Halfords?

TBH, the fact you needed coolant topping up,straight after a service, would worry the hell out of me, and make me question the competence of the garage that did the service.

Regards your message, it can mean a variety of things, although iirc , I had this message due to rising oil levels/dpf issue so the car had to be returned to the dealers to drain some oil out, and a software update, whereby the oil level would register full when actually at three quarters full.

Maybe Halfords are unaware of the rising oil issue, filled up to full, and your oil level has risen due to the way the dpf operates, returning unburnt diesel into the sump.

Regards

Try and find someone local who has VIDA/ DiCE to check the fault codes on the car, there will be someone in or around Leeds with the required kit negating the need to spend £100 at the dealers - Mike

They have put too much oil in , they dont have the knowledge of a dealer , or the ability to decide if the car has the latest ECU software .. you do get what you pay for , have you checked your oil level gauge in the dash or short dipstick right down on the edge of the sump ?? taking out half a litre or a whole litre will usualy sort it but you need to know how much is in there at this moment . you have to check the oil 15 mins after turning off a hot engine .

Thanks - I got them to drain some oil as you suggested and we'll see if that does the trick.

I now need to find a good independent Volvo specialist for future work. Halfords are clueless and the main Volvo dealer is arrogant, expensive and only really interested in corporate business it seems.

Smile Next years service sorted

Thank you for the info, I have just had the same issue using a local garage.
A week after its service the warning message appeared, the sparky checked it over & as they could not find anything wrong re-set the alarm, they informed me that it was most likely a dodgy oil sensor & that if the issue returned I should book the car back in to have a new one fitted.
I can now check the levels & get them to take a little out saving myself a load of cash on new hardware.
A friend with a V70 has informed me that he knows an ex Volvo main dealer engineer who has set himself up as an independent in Leeds, when I discover the details I will post them on the forum, he can do my service next year.

I picked up my XC60 last week and gave it a good run back down the A14 home. This should have cleaned the DPF nicely however, upon using for the first time on Monday, up pops the "Engine Service Required" warning.

Take it to my chap (Volvo trained) who plugs in his reader and there is the Oil Level Too High message. It was reset and off I went only for the message to repeat itself after a couple of stops and 5 miles later.

Upon checking the oil level, it was just on the max. mark. He is going to lower the oil level tomorrow which he anticipates will sort out the problem.

I shall report back the result.

Thus far, dropping the oil level a tad has stopped the "computer says no" message from appearing. Hopefully sorted.
