Majority of modern cars (say those built this century) are commodities/white goods, and should be treated as such. However the best builders of commodities are the Japanese (whether built in Japan or elsewhere), best Japanese car maker - Toyota.
And despite commoditisation people still buy labels not cars !!! We've had more problems with our P2 V70* in 15 years than we had with our 32 year old 745 in the first 15 years of it's life - not sure what that says, but that's our experience. Ford are one of the most improved and are very underrated, my Wife has a 55 plate Focus (2.0 litre petrol) wagon, never failed an MoT and never an advisory - she'd have another. Daughter had a Yaris - perfect. Jon. *V70 hasn't done a 100k yet. |

For me I love my older Volvos. my 240 and 940.
I also have a 2006 Lexus IS 220 diesel that's done 175,000 miles and the engine doesn't have a good reputation for HG failure and as with any diesel DPF and EGR problems. It still drives perfect and very well made and comfy, but ac needs work as leaked out. Getting it serviced tomorrow and AC leak investigated. May try a Lexus Hybrid or buy an LS430 at some point. Ls400 is finest car I ever owned, I don't believe 430 was as well made but still a wonderful car.

The technology of newer stuff on the one hand is nice but this seems to cover the major areas in where modern cars fall short.
I have had a few new cars on lease and gone back to old. Despite not having any major issues with either the new Astra or Merc E350, one can easily see how they will not last and where all the cost cutting has gone. Coupled with expensive repairs etc they are throw away items. The Astra a came out of the factory a bit **** poor but I lived with it for 90,000 miles. My family always had Mercs from the 70's, 80's and 90's when I was growing up and the E350 felt like an Astra compared to the old ones. Even Volvo tech's who maintain my cars say the newer cars are designed to break and parts have shorter service lives so the manufacturers make more cash from the parts/repairs side as well as selling a car.

When I worked for a dealership one of the best cars I saw for reliability old or new was the 2010-2017 Suzuki Swift. £30 road tax, 50mpg on a naturally aspirated petrol engine and no common faults. A fun car to drive as well.
When I worked for a Ford dealer for a month, Transits were going wrong after 30,000 miles, DPF filters were barely lasting the warranty period, Ecoboost Fords were eating their head gaskets after 25,000 miles and all were rusting as soon as a stone tapped the sills. Now as a mobile valeter, I recently cleaned a 2018 Fiesta with 5,000 miles on the clock and that rubbish Supagard paintwork protection kit. The sills had lost half their paint at the front and some spots already had surface corrosion. The interior was made of horrific quality materials from plastics to carpets. If you want an example of low quality, Ford is the glowing ray of excretion that shines brighter than all others. At least on the cheaper end of the spectrum. The ludicrous Ford Edge and boat-sized Galaxys are a small improvement.

Yep I agree. But, its highly unethical as the issues rest far below the surface from deliberate bad engine designs knowing sh!t will break and the manufacturer will happily stick 2 fingers up at the customers. Trouble the cost cutting is so bad yet the prices have risen so much more and the technology doesn't cost all that much either. This really boils my blood Look at Ford's gearbox law suit. Look at the new Focus RS blowing its engine in no time...My wealthy uncle has a new Range Rover Vogue for the wife, its had more visits back to the workshop than to the shops! I love old Mercedes AMG's for example and the exhausts were done well, now its a just a round normal steel pipe cut off hidden behind some metal stick on shape (almost every new car has this).
People just seem blinded by new cars being the most reliable and greatest things ever... when they are generally anything but.
