Unhappy V40 production ending this year, no replacement

Production will cease shortly. There will be no hatchback replacement but a SUV-type thing is due in 2021/22.

Interesting that they replaced the S40 saloon with the V40 hatchback, and now they are bringing back the S40 and killing the V40.

To be honest, if Volvo can make a dinky version of the XC40 and retains it's cute features... it'll be printing money. XC40 is the quirkiest looking Volvo since the C30, but it's still a bit too big in my opinion. Needs something the size of a renault captur.

I understand that the V40 sold pretty well, however it is a bit of a boring car yet rather expensive at the same time.

I think one of the issues with the V40 is the fact that Volvo are trying to apply all of their insane safety technology into a sleek hatchback shape, I've always assumed this is the reason why the V40 is so cramped inside, especially given it's actually quite a wide car.

An end of life Volvo is always a good buy however. For me it's just a shame they dropped the 2.5-litre engine. If I could buy an end of life V40, and drop the 5 pot engine in (with V40 cross country AWD), I'd be laughing for years.

It's also the most competitive market sector that Volvo are active in at the minute, and as the article says the V40 is now relatively old chassis tech.

Another issue which I discovered recently is the D2 I think now uses a de-tuned version of the VEA 2.0 engine rather than the 1.6 PSA derived unit and the emissions are poor compared to small diesels from the V40's competitors - that makes it an unattractive company car option when the equivalent Golf is £40 - £50 a month less in BIK tax.

Just like with the supermarkets, this sector is being disrupted to some extent by the new foreign discounters - Hyundai, Kia, Dacia etc. so Volvo are probably quite happy to walk away from it and leave it to Ford, Vauxhall/Peugeot/Citroen etc. to fight it out with the discounters and the Germans.

It may hit some dealers hard where the V40 makes up a significant percentage of their sales.
