V70 2002 D5 - Starting issue (Slow to start)
I recently picked up what I think to be a good condtion 2002 V70 - D5 Manual, 175k miles.
It was cheap so I didnt probe to much into issues but it drove great on the test and has driven fine ever since. Previous owner told me that he had to jump it that morning as he hadnt been started in 3 weeks and he suspects that the alarm drains the battery as it had let him down before when parked for a fortnite at the airport. I did notice the alarm was randomly going off so I pulled the fuse. I dont care about the alarm. The issue I am concerned about is it seems very slow to start at all times but particularly when sat overnight and cold. Im talking 2 rounds 10 seconds or so when cold and 5-7 seconds when warmed up. I first through battery so I charged it to full, same issue. I also thought the battery may not be delivering the required amps so I hooked it up to the charger and started.... Same issue. I think the battery is slightly under spec'd : Its a Yusa 3000 YBX 3096 : 76ahm 680A(en) I have no dash warnings or anything like that but when I pop a code reader on I get: P0088 - (Powertrain) Common Rail High Pressure P0244 - (Powertrain) Turbo charger wastegate solenoid "A" Range / Performance I have only had a go at looking at the P0088 to see what I can do at home to help out as it seems that could be related to my starting issue. I took a look around on youtube etc and some say to change the Fuel pressure regulator (low side) so I did that... Same issue. Others have said the fuel return hose from the injectors may be clogged. So i have taken a look in a couple of spots to clean them out they seem ok. I have also unplugged and cleaned up the connectors associated with the fuel rail but they were fine. No signs of leaks anywhere either. Before I take this to a specialist and spend more than the car value getting it fixed is there anything else I should be taking a look at? Once started the car drives great , pulls hard in all gears and no adverse noises or smoke or anything. Cheers |

Had a problem with rail high pressure, rail low pressure. Changed HP pump,regulator, filter. Was going to change the rail pressure sensor. Then spoke to a specialist who suggested the injectors. Turned out to be injector 1.

Ours took a bit more cranking and ran on 4 or maybe even 3 cylinders for a few seconds in cold weather. Got the glowplugs changed and it's perfect now. It'll show up as such on a scan, or at least mine did.

issue got worse - May have found something.
So last couple of days this issue has been getting worse.
I have the high pressure code as previously discussed (p0088). today when I went to start and it was quiet I could here somthing building pressure in the the front like air being displaced from something. I took the cover off and something caught my eye on the leak off pipes from the injections. All the injectors and return pipes are bone dry BUT where the last leak off pipe joins the little non return valvue there is fresh diesel and residue of diesel around it. I wonder whether this value has clogged or stopped functioning properly leading to a build up of pressure? Pic attached. I have some spare leak of hose, could I bypass this non return whilst I source another??

Fixed
The leakoff non return valve was indeed completly block so I replacemed the hose and that solved P0088.
BUT the starting issue persisted. I changed the battery for a full spec bosch - Issue persisted. I cleaned all the electrical terminals earths etc - Issue persisted. I was at my wits end so I called a diesel specialist. He diagnosed one of the injectors (no.4) was leaking excessively. He fitted a new sealing kit on it and it FIXED the problem. 180 quid (mostly labour) which I am more than happy with! Looks like you we right Roy
