Its hard to tell for sure from the pictures, but have you got those nuts on the wrong way round ?

The tapered edge should be against the wheel.

As Dr.Rog says, clean the hub and whilst you're at it clean the mounting point on the wheel. Use sand paper or the pan scrub you used on your wheels!
The wheels are Wentworth alloys and steel nuts are fine to use.
They do suit the car and so they should, they were made for the 940.
Just a little tip as to cleanning your wheels. I used Mr Muscle oven cleaner and an old toothbrush, the wheels came up pretty good and they're not scratched.

Nice wheels. I have some from my GLE and they will go on the new car when the currently fitted tyres wear out.

Your nuts are rusty so replacement is a good idea. The inner face of the nut should be tapered the same angle as the wheel, try this off the car. If its a neat fit its OK. Your nuts look the same as mine so I think they are OK.

If you think the wheel is not "home" flat against the mounting face then that is an issue, You should not have to force it at all. Is there a build up of rust on the spigot (mounting diameter)? if so scrub it off.

Its worth noting that the alloys are very thick, so the bearing should not protrude through. Also the taper of the nuts aligns the wheel as well, more acurately than a clearance spigot. So make sure there is no bent studs and they are the right pitch.

Good luck.
Hi , yes the wheels push fully home onto the mounting plate with no problems, theres no rust on or around the spigot, i 98% de-rusted the car within 3 - 4 weeks of purchasing it, the nuts are the right way around. i may invest in a full set of wheel nuts for all wheels, they're not rusty at the moment, just a little discoloured from all the grease i smear on them each time they're removed (copper grease) i check their tightness each week with my checks.

"The main difference is the collar on the nuts. It is much larger for alloy wheels due to the softer metal needing a larger surface area to retain them on the hub.

Never use steel-wheel nuts with an alloy wheel as the nuts can damage and rip right through the wheel. "

Sorry to disagree but in this case the above may not be an issue. Both my cars have the same nuts, 19mm A/F with no additional flange beyond the hexagonal profile.

I know what you mean though, my Peugeot had large almost spherical tapered collars at the end of the hexagon, almost an inch in diameter. They certainly spread the load. Unfortunately they where chrome plated and £6 each!

I read somewhere that Volvo alloy wheels have steel inserts to protect the wheels from steel wheel nuts.

The only Volvo wheel nuts specifically designed for use with alloy wheels are those that will be visible in use.
