Default 1997 940 GLE auto saloon - ex embassy car

Yes, thats right, it IS for sale after all. Wifey didn't get along with the interior, and I was going to modify it as you know, but I've decided that it isn't right for the car, so I've bought a more modern car to commute in - so the 940 is genuinely up for sale.

Its on ebay at £4200 - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/285430226759

I was going to advertise it on car and classic, but the T&Cs are very very long and refer to lots of potential fees, so I've taken the easy option of ebay. I know I'll get a few clowns, but thats the was it is I guess.

If someone from the forum buys the car I'll include some spares if it sells at the full price, otherwise I'll be selling the spares after the car has been collected.

Its been a really hard decision, but I really couldn't modify the car with it having that provenance and being in that condition - it would be sacrilege and I'd hate myself.

You all know how much time, money and blood I've put into this car and I'd happily sell it to a friend - its a corker and it'll serve someone really well for decades.

I sold my 740 on car and classic and there were no fees at all. I found it to be much better than Ebay

Oh no RT, saw yours on flea bay earlier today, such a pity after all the work, but good luck with the sale.

Hopefully you won’t get too many numpties.

What’s the replacement going to be then??

Cheers
Steve

Thanks guys.

I did a load of research which persuaded me not to buy German Since 2000 or so their cars have had no end of serious engineering issues, primarily to do with camchains and tensioners. Basically I'd have to get them replaced as soon as I bought the car, at a cost of £1500-2000! I refuse to do that, so I turned Japanese

I've bought a 2013 Honda Civic 1.6 diesel. Full Honda service history, 2 owners and its in very good condition, just some bodywork blemishes and paint fade. But for a commuting hack its perfect. Its more fun to drive than it sounds to be fair. The steering in particular is lovely and direct, very responsive. Its super comfy and the economy...I've taken it to work a few times now and my average mpg is... 68.9!!! Free road tax. But the insurance is horrendous - apparently car insurance generally has gone up to ridiculous levels this year and the best deal I could get was to cancel the 940 policy and get a new one for the Honda - at £500ish

I'll be listing some of the 940 parts I have here first, and if nobody wants them they'll go on ebay. I'll start listing them next week as I'm on holiday then and so can take pictures etc.

I must admit I have mixed feelings about selling the 940. Its in fabulous condition, has such a low mileage, and has that provenance... but it wouldn't be right to modify such an original example. I'd be furious if I read about someone else doing it It'll serve someone well, just hope they appreciate it!

Keep it and modify it, the mods you have planned are reversible and it's not like it was owned by the king of Sweden just some guy from an embassy drove it around.

Use the honda as a cheap nasty daily like I do with my 2007 Clio and then you can use the extra funds saved in fuel for the mods, like I've done again, plus when I drive the 940 I appreciate it so much more.

Sorry to play Devils Advocate but would you rather mod a ‘bad car’, bud?

Believe me, i understand your reluctance.

The very reasonable price for a lot of car on eBay seems to be ignored, so far, for whatever reasons.

Harsh to say but it looks like others see it differently.

It’s a good car. If you wanted to mod a car. It’s the car you would seek out.

Just a quick note to wrap this up...

I didn't get any reasonable offers for the car, so its going into storage over the winter and will continue its life in my possession Its far too good a car to sell for peanuts, its honestly the best of out 13(?) 900s that I've had, so its a keeper after all.

Any parts that I've agreed to sell will be sold as promised, the rest will be put back into the big 'might be useful at some point 'spares box.

Looks like you're stuck with me for a few more years peeps

All the best, Sam
