I have an 850 T5 estate. I love to drive it. But unfortunately the Mrs recently had a very light knock at the front of the drivers door. As it was rubbing the wing ever so slightly I decided to carefully ease it out with a crow bar carefully padded in the hinged side of the door. This was done from the inside of the car. It worked fine.

However, a few weeks later I have found the the door clicks very badly when opening and closing it.

Upon investigation I have discovered that the 'click' comes from the retainer which stops the door flying off when you open it. There are 2 ridges ( or detents) on the retainer bar which hold the door half or fully open and it is when these ridges ride over the spring mechanism wheels inside the door that it clicks.

It appears that one of the wheels is worn on it's shaft.

Is this a known problem or is there something else that I have missed?

Thanks in anticipation

Adrian

Hi Adrian,

This sounds like a very common problem on the 850's and 70 series cars.

I suspect the weld points have given way on the A piller just inside of the gust stop.

Its a bit of a pain to fix as the dashboard trim needs to be removed adjacent to the A piller and the retaining plate needs to be spot welded back on.

Volvo have known about this problem prior to the release of the 70 series Classic but I think even the 70 series is prone to this kind of problem.

Your Volvo dealer will have seen it many times. I paid about £60 for the fix with my dealer some years ago now.

The problem can occure on any of the doors but it is more likely to happen on the drivers door due to its extra use.

Hope this is of some help.

Make sure the fixing is tight on the door pillar. This come loose and cause the noise. If that does not fix it you may have to go down the welding route.

Thanks Patrick

Yes, I've checked and that was the problem. I have managed to fix it by MIG welding from the outside with the door removed from it's hinges. Worked nicely. Thanks again.

Thats what I did with mine. Just took the door off and mig welded it on and repainted. That rubber boot covers any mess.
