I'm glad that cars have progressed like they have - and to do so electronics / software has played an important part. Without all this technology then we wouldnt have had the safety features we have today like ABS, EBD, DSTC, Airbags etc.
Car diagnostics have just evolved like most things over the last 20 years, maybe in another 20 years we'll be deriding the complexity of the hydrogen fuel cell and wishing for a return to simple technologies like EGR valves and actual physical wiring. I like this particular you tube video, if you've not already seen it its worth a view! Volvo 940 vs Renault Modus |

lemon aide
Hi Shandy,
Here in Canada we had an individual who has made a living publishing a book called "Lemon Aide. His popularity due in part to the book helped him launch a political career fighting for the consumer. If you don't have a current car ombudsman you might follow several of the suggestions received in this post. Contacting the media, maybe a writer like Craig Cheetman, a UK journalist, who published a book called: "The World's Worst Cars". Think your best bet is to contact a consumers protection department in government. Document your lemon's difficulties & the response from dealer. I assume that you have had little or no satisfaction going directly to Volvo? Several major car builders do have a quality control & consumer complaint section. Difficulty is finding them! Sometimes the service manual provides an address. Going public can be an alternative, copy complaint to Volvo. Backing up the car's sordid history with service records may help. Since you haven't had success with the dealer I'd go to the top of Volvo & whatever ministry handles consumer protection. My concern would be that company officials know the problem & are into denial as well as ignoring your bad experience with the dealership. Ford has a history of ignoring real problems (see "Pinto", Cheetham, p101). Eventually government was forced to act. Corporate indifference after you have paid for their product is disgusting! The least they should have done is buy it back at fair market value. Although you have made a case that this particular car has suspect value. There are lemons, sounds like you bought one, wouldn't be surprised to hear that more have had a like experience! Is class action open to you? Good luck, keep the faith & don't let them get away with it. Bill |
