Default Splutter at 3000 rpm

Hi everyone,

I recently bought my first Volvo S40 2.0d ('05 plate 71k) and everything has been OK.
BUT, when the engine is hot and giving it the beans it splutters at about 3000rpm on full throttle in 3rd, 4th etc.

It seems fine at part throttle and when the engine is fairly cold.

Has anyone experienced simular problems, found any resolutions and "gulp" how much did it cost? (mine out of warranty with 71k on clock)

Regards

Mark.

I had exactly this problem, albeit on my 2004 1.8 petrol. Symptoms were:

1: Acceleration 'splutter' approaching 3000rpm
2: Only on hot engine (eg: 30 minutes of 70mph+)
3: Only occurred under usual motorway acceleration in 3rd, 4th or 5th.

Dealer identified faulty fuel pump, replaced under warranty, no problems since! I've no idea how much these are if you have to pay for them i'm afraid. But, the dealer did have the job done in less than an hour, so labour should be fairly cheap. I would contact Volvo UK, as you may be entitled to a good will contribution if it is found to be the fuel pump, even if it is outside of warranty.

Feel free to let us know when you get it fixed and what caused the issue. I have a similar problem on my T5 at the moment and the dealer is struggling to find the cause of it.

yes had this problem on my E4 2.0D at about 23k miles.

Fault was found to be small split on fuel pipe near engine.

It was not leaking but drawing air in. Under normal load and light throttle demand, car was fine but at about 3 k revs when you needed a quick getaway or even when demanding more power at motorway speeds, car would momentarily stall before recovering. A bit scarry at roundabouts I can assure you. It took the dealer two attempts before they found it.

I have posted these details before about 13 months ago.

Good luck.

I am also feeling the stutter, but usually in 6th, just below 2k rev's. My car is chipped by RICA, will the fuel pump be replaced under warranty?

If the dealer read the fault codes it is possible they will see that the car has been chipped, Volvo may then decide that the modification has contributed towards the early failure of the fuel pump (or whatever else is causing the issue) and then the warranty will be null and void for that fault.
If they don't spot that it's been chipped then you should have no problems, but be prepared to argue that chipping the engine has not caused the failure. Volvo are generally very good with their warranty work (as long as you are within the warranty terms) so I would be surprised if they kicked up too much of a stink over it.
