Default Mechanical Noise

Hi all,

bought a V50 2.4i Manual here in South Africa September 2004. Had a few niggles as we went along, but the last few months have been fraying a few nerves...

For about two years now various Volvo dealerships have been trying to locate the source of a mechanical noise coming from the left rear suspension area. They replaced rear stabilizer arms; dismantled complete rear suspension, lubricated set-up and re-fitted; had electronic sensors on rear set-up to try and pin-point source of noise; last week thought it was the audio system amp in that region because it is fitted across various sections of sheet metal - all of this with no results to date.

Anybody else had this sort of concern? The noise is normally quite clear at low speeds when going over a curb or the like, but the last few weeks constantly audible almost all the time up to about 60kph.

The only thing I would say is are you SURE the noise actually eminates from the area you say.. Odd noises transmit through the bodyshell with extraordinary ease, and the noise just might be from somewhere else entirely.
Worth a check before you tear hair out.

I think I get something similar when I'm pulling away from a junction - almost like the weight transfer to the back of the car causes a sudden stress on something - I suspect that it's a bit of a noisy spring seat or similar - it doesn;t affect the way the car drives thought so I'm not too bothered about it.

Hi all,

after another few months of our local Volvo dealership here in South Africa battling with my car, they have evenetually nailed down this utterly frustrating problem.

A few weeks after my initial post, they tracked down problem to the aligment of rear seat back and the catch on the body.
Other part of the noise was back a few weeks later, but after next visit, dealer worked on actual seat mechanism that locks onto catch.

All noise from that area now eliminated.

Thanks
