There it is!!

Both headlight bulbs replaced shortly after purchase!

But now...… How would you adjust the beams focus?

There are adjusters on the lamp to adjust the angle.

In the good old days little bits like that were sorted during the test.

Thanks to having everything computerised testers have to follow the book. If you fall out of line of national failure rates VOSA investigate you

focus?
focus will be off only in 2 possible cases:
-either bulb isn`t pushed all the way into its seat, therefore not sitting deep enough
-wrong (or manufactured not to spec) bulb fitted

wrong aim (beam too high/too low or even sideways) will be due to either:
bulb sitting at an angle in its seat
coil inside the bulb not being in the focal point of reflector, aka skewed coil (this is where bulbs differ between themselves)

It was changed to stop dishonesty. A few testers spent all day making extra money by getting owners to part with cash to 'make a small adjustment' to the lights, wipers, tyres, anything. So now they must follow the script, deviate from it and they can lose their tester status. Every fault noted, fixed by someone else and retested. Fail reasons analysed for any unscrupulous behaviour patterns that could show an agreement with a friend who fixes and splits the money.

And yet.... The lighting (major defect (!)) was rectified free of charge, and the smeary wiper blades were installed, also free of charge. I think I'm just too used to common sense to cope with modern day dilemmas!

Thanks for all the replies.

Perhaps you have found an honest MOT tester at a garage that provides real customer service and wants that custom to return.

If you are in the Medway area, Mick's MOTs are not only fair and honest they sort out minor problems - bulbs etc without charge when the MOT has been done.

I've been using their services for the last 20 years - they have always been reliable, honest and have always found the cheapest easiest way of solving a problem........before you ask, I don't work for them just very grateful for their input and expertise over the years!

I think you have a very good garage there and should stick with them.
