The dealer you bought it off is liable for rectifying the fault (if you don't want a refund), as the car was faulty at the point of sale.

Probably worth contacting them and advising them before you get the work done they may even have an account with Volvo.

Worth giving them the opportunity of putting it right for you though.

Good luck, keep us informed

Wouldn't really know on the price, i think software updates are around £70 so the oil change (+ reseting the software/counter etc) is looking like £180.

Had some constructive discussions with dealer who seems at this stage prepared for paying for the software update and oil change but he wants to discuss the problem with his volvo specialist technician that he uses and promised to get back to me on monday before we go ahead.

Also offerd to pick up the car and get repaired and give me a courtesy car to use whilst waiting but has also offered me the option of a 2 yr warrenty at cost price to cover any mechanical or electrical problem which will cover any individual claim upto a sum of £5000 which we are mulling over.

,that aside took the car out for a drive today first 30min was problem free then the box started to play up between 2/3 and a few times between 3/4 but i switched to manual mode on geartronic and it was perfect as i drove in this mode for a good 20 mins making a number of gear changes with no blips at all and at times switching back and forth between manual and auto the problem was still there other than this we love the car and hope its nothing to costly or serious to give us many years of trouble free motoring like all our other volvo's have but we will see fingers crossed.

Sounds like the dealer is being positive so thats good news, the warranty would be worth it for peace of mind.

Wise to seek further advice, although i'm sure you love the car i am sure it would soon sour if you had to pay for a replacement gearbox.

I bought one that was supposedly in better condition than it actually turned out and turned out to have missing history despite being advertised with full history.

I kept the car rather than pursuing a refund, i have spent £3K in 3 months and the solicitors letter has been sent to the dealer this week. Wish i'd handed the car back and bought another one.

Hope it all works out for you

Your not wrong i would sour if i had to buy another box as i was quoted 6k by volvo today but lets look at the positives at this time he seems responsive and willing to help but as we all know talk is cheap and its action i want to see.
I think the the thing that bothers me the most is ive had variuos different volvos since 1995 a lovely 850 t5 estate 8 yrs (i loved that car)and all i changed was 1 air con pump, since 2004 c70 t5gt convertable nothing changed in 6 years (ONLY 39000 MILES ON CLOCK )which is what we px against the xc90 and my current vehicle i still have a lovely v70 d5 estste 2005 with 66000 miles which i brought with 24000 miles on the clock i have only changed bulbs so there you see you have this mind set and confidence that whenever you get in your volvo it will take you where ever you want to go? im not so sure now which is a shame was going to sell my v70 might have to put that on the back burner for a few months till i gain some confidence in the xc90 HOPEFULLY WONT HAVE TO SPEND NO MONEY ON IT THAT WOULD REALLY **** ME OFF as i exchanged an stunning low miler c70 against it

There are plenty of options out there for recon gearboxes for much less but hopefully it won't come to that though and it can be solved relatively cheaply and quickly for you.

I suppose one thing to bear in mind is that forums are generally where peolpe post their problems and its easy to assume the worst. I was convinced I needed a new brake control module or DEM when i had an anti skid service required warning, turned out that 4 wheel alignment and recalibration of the module was all that was required, cost me £99 at Volvo.

Yes your right I'm not gonna dwell on it what will be will be I don't think there is anything mechanically wrong if there was it would not work at all and will I'm pretty confident software and oil change will cure it I think the 2nd warranty is a good shout peace of mind is everything I'll Post pictures in the week

Probably find that they don't actually do the rebuild themselves and will probably send it to a specialist. Might be cheaper going straight to the specialist
