I use a specialist in Birmingham. They have done a damn good job for a very reasonable price. I find the Dealers very inflexible when it comes to price. So far so good with GRN Motors.

I have a 06 with 120 000 km on it. I take it in every year for an annual service either full or limited to have the oil changed and the car looked at. I also get an extra year of roadside assistance.

I let the dealer point out what is wrong or can/should be fixed and then I figure out what I can do.

2010
front strut cup - dealer (120£)

2011
rotors and pads all around - me
1 front drop link - me
1 control arm - dealer
alignment - dealer

me total - £400
dealer - £200

2012
rear shocks - me (£100)

So far the maintenance has not been too bad and I have saved some money by doing the easier jobs myself.

My inlaws have an 01 XC70 so I get to see the kind of maintenance issues I may have in front of me. Maybe I will upgrade to a V70 II before that hits.

Just paid £60 for auto gearbox adaptation & fluid counter reset......that has either highlighted a problem I wasn't aware I had, or just created a problem.

New gearbox anybody........

  1. Had the car serviced at Volvo Specialist
  2. Replaced front strut top bearings & spring seats
  3. Replaced both front drop links
  4. Replaced Alarm Siren Module
  5. Replaced rear Anti-roll Bar complete
  6. Replaced rear drop links
  7. Carried out auto gearbox flush (10 litres Volvo ATF)
  8. Replaced B4 servo
  9. Replaced front inner track rods
  10. Replaced outer track rod ends
  11. Bought Volvo service items, oil/air/fuel filters, plug set, 8 Litres Castrol Magnatec

All parts genuine Volvo EXCEPT track rods/rod ends ,drop links and strut bearings/spring seats

Now the car has an ABS/Anti-skid message which I have found that the front nearside abs reluctor ring has a tooth missing.

Will soon need 4 new tyres, front discs (bought the pads already) & front lower ball joints

When I get the courage, I will add all this up.

It won't be long at this rate, before the car will be virtually new again

The main problem I have is at this moment, I do not have the money available to get something newer.........and I have to admit, the cost of petrol versus economy is making me think about a diseasel..........yeah I know!!

What does it cost you a year to keep your car on the road??

Ignore the cost of an MOT/tax/fuel etc......but include anything else over and above this......
Hi,if you haven't yet got the front disc's,Eurocarpart's have extended their January offer.

I've just got my rear disc today through them with "click and collect",useing "parts25",promo code and it cost me £48.50.A saving of around £16.

We have only had our V70 for ten months, but I am sad enough to keep a spreadsheet to track running costs, so I can tell you that in those ten months we have spent £662 on servicing and repairs, including:

- Cambelt, inc. tensioners, idler pulley and the belt on the other end of the engine (non technical I know, its a D5252T)
- Service
- Headlamp bulb
- Aux Belt & NSF indicator bulb holder

All done at a local Volvo specialist, because I am (a) useless at home mechanics and (b) too lazy to learn.

ETA we have covered just under 12,000 miles in those ten months.

Hi Jason

For the first time ever, I only replaced the pads, rather than a disc set and pads. The discs did not show any signs of wear, without any lips on the edges, so I just replaced the pads.

Previous discs sets and pads where always replaced as a set on my V70R...it just loved to chew them up and warp the front discs!!
