Default V50 1.8 FlexiFuel Vs standard 1.8 Petrol

Howdy,

I just purchased a used V50 1.8 SE flexi-fuel last week and in general I'm very happy with it. I left it back to dealer today to correct wheel alignment and I had a replacement 1.8 petrol for the day (non-FF).

Engine in the standard 1.8 seems much sweeter, smoother and more economical based on computer figures!! So I was a little dissappointed to hand it back! Dealer says the 1.8FF runs at a higher compression ratio and thus is a little more rough around the edges and less economical.....is there any way to reset the factory settings to the standard 1.8 petrol, now that Ethanol is no longer an option in the Rep of Ireland??

Thanks
Ronan

i would of thought it was an inherent part of the engine if based on compression ratios?

Both engines have the same compression rates (both 1.8 adnd 1.8F have a 10,8:1 -> check THIS LINK for official Volvo numbers), same power output. The only differences in the engines, are:

1. valve seats
2. return pipe for fuel
3. different software to run ethanol mixes of all types

That is it. The 1.8F will automatically recognize the fuel type filled (measured by the lambda sondes). So the dealer is talking basically a lot of hot air.

If you are clever, you keep the 1.8F and have an LPG system fitted, as it is - together with the 2.0F - LPG compatible. All other petrols aren't supposed to be converted.

You can't say it is economical just by going on the non-calibrated computer figures... You work out your MPG/100 km/xl and see if that works for you
