voltage regulator?
I think I need a new voltage regulator. Symptoms are: volts guage oscillates between 14 and 16 volts at tickover, headlights go brighter/dimmer in time with the guage.
Can anyone confirm my diagnosis? Thanks John |

16 Volts is far too high, you'll blow bulbs like you've bought shares in Osram Sylvania. Try to adjust the regulator first, many of the 164 regulators are easily adjustable. The green book has instructions.

Fivehundred,
Thanks, I didn't know they could adjust. Could you enlighten me (pardon the pun) because I don't have the green book. But, would adjustment cure the oscillation in voltage I am getting? Cheers John |

It can do, because the adjustment actually covers the high and low voltages. When they're adjusted properly the voltage should remain within a set band. Flickering can incidentally also be caused by a bad connection on the main terminal of the starter motor. If you PM me your address I'll photocopy the pages monday and drop them in the post to you.
