240GLY Airflow Sensor unit.
Just checking round my 'new' car, cleaning distibutor (Yes it has got the nasty rev limit rotor arm!), air cleaner pipes, crankcase breather flame trap (what fun) etc, when I noticed that the airflow sensor unit is mounted on a couple of mini shock mounts, but on mine the front mount is cracking up. Its still attached both ends, but I'd like to replace it. Can this be done with the airflow sensor still in the car and all the gubbins connected, or do I have to take it out. More to the point, can you buy the little rubber mounts?
I cleaned up the sensor plate while I was at it, and made sure that its centered OK, which it is, but in the air inlet chamber underneath.. YUK.. what a lot of oily gungy muck. cleaned out as much as I could with a rag through the air inlet, but loath to do too much in case I hit and upset anything I shouldn't. Any instant tips on cleaning this? Carb cleaner?? BTW I discovered that the captive nut on top clamp on the rubber bellows connecting the airflow meter to the rest of the unit isn't captive after all. Where the hell did that go. Oh well, spare jubilee clip! At least I know it didn't go anywhere vital, just either straight down, or onto the undertray!

Rubber mounts are available from Volvo but sadly at a silly price I think about £15 a piece. They just screw in so you may well be able to do them in situ. Gunge builds up if engine is overfilled with oil - carb cleaner fine to clean it with.

Rubber Mounts price!!!!
I've looked up the little rubber shock mount at Volvo's... Silly price indeed, £19.95!!
Does it really need to be shock mounted I wonder? What about a bolt with a nylon or rubber spacer? The unit must be subjected to a heck of a lot of vibes anyway with the proximity of the block, the fuel distributor, etc etc.

Time to get acquainted with your nearest remove it yourself scrap yard I think. There you can practice removal without risk of harm to your own car. I would not risk using any sort of bodged up mounting, you could very easily cause more harm than good that way. Failing that try one of the Volvo breakers who advertise in Driver.
