Where on the pump is this filter you all speak of please.
Any diagrams to aid the attack?

ps agree with the poster above, in the "olden days" of Marinas etc it was a bag or bottle in the engine compartment. In fact I had cars where the screenwash wasn't electric, it was a hand operated push pump on the dash. Hillman Imp IIRC.

It’s behind the front of the near side wheel arch.

I think you can get to it by dropping the under tray but you’ll need to get the front of the car to decent height.

And the filter is on the end of the intake for the washer pump where it pushes into the bottle. It also serves as a seal.

I gave up in the end and got a local Indy to do it on his ramp.

Found the pump, where is the filter?
The long spigot passes through the grommit but no sign of a filter anywhere.
Pump whirrs but no water reaches the jets so either the pipe to the jets is blocked or the pump makes a noise but doesn't pump. "The lights are on but there's no one home" as it were.
Tried to get the pipe off the bottom of the pump but don't want to damage anything. What's the grey fitting?
Best option seems buy a new pump and maybe replace the pipework too but it seems to be buried under countless plastic panels and stuff.
And the filter? Where has that gone?
One thing I notice is the electric connection has some insulating tape on it. Someone been here before me I wonder?
Cheers for any pointers you may have.

If you have headlight washers then it's that one. The pump you want should have 2 rubber hoses on it one for the front screen the other for the tailgate. That's for a 2014 V70 assuming nothing changed during the model years.

I had dribbly washer jets. The pipe from the pump to the first T-piece I disconnected and checked for pressure from the pump. It pumped. Then I checked the t-pieces by disconnecting the pipes at the nozzles - it pumped. I then reomved the nozzles and dangled then in an ultraonic cleaner - Bingo! Worked a treat. As an aside I believe there is witchcraft in the T-pieces. I couldn't blow through them in any direction but they let pumped water through. I also suspect they have a one way mechanism so I'm not sure drilling them out is a good idea!

They're drilled now so no going back there.
Anyway, Job Jobbed so thanks to all who offered support and ideas.
The pump can be accessed from underneath if you remove enough screws and heave on the black plastic panel enough. Pump can be prised out of the bottle then the filter which was blocked solid.

Looking now, what is the recommended screen wash which won't solidify and block the filter?

High alcohol content wash additives will keep the lines clear. Volvo's own is very good but is a little expensive. The real no-no is using washing-up liquid which contains glycerine for hand softening when washing dishes and which drops out of solution in the lines and blocks them. The same applies to cheap wash additives which are detergent based and do not keep the lines clear. If the fluid smells of alcohol it'll probably be OK.

The water that I collected when draining smelled very much like the fruit flavoured stuff that Halfords used to smell.....

Default Windscreen/Tailgate washer pump.

I bave 2013 XC70 SE Lux D5 was having problems with blockage to screenwash pump. Having read a lot of posts about getting underneath and removing panels or two person job removing bumper I didnt fancy any of these being over seventy years young. Was sitting looking out of window at car and wondered what was behind N/S foglight. Removed it and had immediate access to screenwash pump used screwdriver to lever it out pulled out rubber seal/filter which let a load of gunk out. Filter was blocked solid cleaned it while hose was running through tank. Reassembled put small amount of water in to test worked better than had done for last year or so put everything back together refilled screenwash washers working perfectly. As i said i am Seventy plus only took me about 25 minutes. Make sure to wear something arround wrist some sharp edges in there.
