D4164T Drain diesel filter

Just done service on my v70, and i've checked off everything on the list except draining the fuel filter.

I'm not really sure what i need to do here, do i need to fill the filter up with diesel like you do when you replace it? Or is it just to turn the knob and drain some and then tighten again?

Filter looks like this, and is fitted right next to the engine.


Here's the list i've been following for the service

Every one year or 20.000 kms / 12.500 miles, you should:

1. Change engine oil and oil filter
2. Parking brake: Check and adjust if needed
3. Check tire pressure
4. Check brake pads and brake discs wear (minimum thickness of front brake pads: 3 mm/0,12″. minimum thickness of rear brake pads: 2 mm/0,8″).
5. Exterior lights: Check all lights and replace if needed
6. Drain the fuel filter
7. Check brake/clutch oil fluid level
8. Check power steering oil level
9. Check windscreen / windshield washer fluid level
10. Check and adjust the antifreeze/corrosion protection Egnine coolant
11. Replace the Air cleaner (ACL) passenger compartment air filter
12. Reset the service reminder indicator to zero.

Draining the filter using the drain valve on the base will remove both water and small bits of sediment from the filter housing. This further prevents the possibility of fuel system contamination, and is something that is commonly actioned when undertaking diesel fleet maintenance. I prefer to change my filter yearly, which somewhat prevents the accumulation of water and sediment. Water can be very harmful to diesel fuel systems, so it's a good idea to drain the filter at least annually, or more frequently if you use cheap fuel. However, changing the filter more frequently is always the better option.

Filter was changed less than a year ago so not gonna change it this service, do i need to fill the filter with diesel after draining it?

Not necessary, as the in tank sender unit will fill the filter. After draining the filter, turn the key to ignition position 2 for 10 seconds, then switch ignition off. Repeat a few times without trying to start the car. This should prime the filter.

In the pic of that filter in the Original posters post, looking your way upwards from the port labeled "G" there is an electrical connector and then there is a round knurled thing?

My question is what is that round knurled thing for, is it a breather to loosen before you then loosen the water drain plug in order to let the filter drain better or what is it?
