crazy notion about piston rings/pistons
This generates from a chat in the pub: It has been suggested that the piston rings can be replaced by removal of the pistons with the engine still in the car ! I know it can be done on some vehicles but I have never read that it can be done on the 800 series engine I dont even think it could be done on my 760 or 740 or 240 for that matter. I'm guessing there would need to be some way of sticking the bearings to the connecting rods or to the crank as the piston was dropped back. I would say it would be difficult if the bores needed honing as the metal shards would cover the crank
Maybe someone here knows different. Think the person was a touch drunk and spouting rubbish as is normal down the pub.

I know for a fact that is can't be done on the red block engines because the subframe that the engine sits on is in the way. As for the whiteblock 5 cylinder engines, It would be tough to get the oil pan out, but it is possible. I still don't think it is a good way to do it and it would probably be more work then just dropping the motor out the bottom with the sub frame.

ive done this on the ford cvh engine its a piece of p!ss on that. but as you will have to take the manifolds and head off and the sump etc it would be easier and probably quicker to take the whole (engine box combo) lot out and take the engine to pieces outside the car plus if youve got it out allready and it needs a rebore or hone or faceing youve allready got it out!

pistons
It was just an idea that was put to me in the pub, like they do, I have no intention of pulling the pistons out of my engine ill let it simply fail gracefully in another 200k

Thanks for the heads up
One of two things is my option. Grab another engine from a U-pull it or send it out to the machine shop and hope I have a good combination on selecting parts to make it a stronger engine.
Marvelous!!! OUCH! |
