Exclamation speedo

I have just brought another volvo, this time a v70 estate 1999, and the speedo is not working. When starting the needle goes right round to the right - the radio comes on loud - and the miles traveled above the total miles starts to count up and then it stops the needle goes right back to the left and than the radio goes down in volume and from then on the needle does not move! can anyone help or point me in the right direction.

WOW, that is some electrical issue you have there. I would just start going through and checking all the wiring for shorts and the like.

Hmmm, that sounds more like a broken track on the pcb of the dash. Try thinking whats common to the radio and the speedo. Is there remote volume on the 99 model? It could be a bad earth around the dash somewhere, as said before look at connectors to the dash clocks and the stereo. Has someone tried to fit a different stereo in it in the past and butchered the wiring? Does the fault clear if you unplug the stereo?
ps modern dashboards have self test modes, some fords if you hold the trip button in and turn the key the dials will spin up and then reset, so could be a dash fault. Good luck.

Yes, the stereo volume is connected to vehicle speed on these cars. Faster you go, louder it gets, hence why your volume goes up then down with speedo needle.

Sorry to clarify, does it have remote volume ie on the steering wheel or on the stalks, the auto volume may me on the stereo itself and just alters te volume dependant on cabin noise due to extra speed, cant remember exactly how it senses, ages since i worked on them, i was looking for something common to the stereo and the dash, as mines a 98, wasnt sure if the stereo controls were the same.

The speedo is powered by the abs system - might be worth checking that out as well, could be dry joints in the ABS ECU.
