Default Drivers side wing mirror not tilting...

The driver's wing mirror on my 2014 XC70 doesn't tilt when I use the buttons on the door panel to alter it. I can hear the motor running and it wants to move but it just kind of judders in place there's something clicking behind it. It's not really a big issue but I don't want it to cause further damage to any internal components as it tries to manoeuvre itself into the memory position when a different ignition key is used.

I can't find a fix for this online. I asked my local indie garage to look at this and they concluded just live with it because the only option is to spend a grand(!) at Volvo for a new wing mirror assembly or give them a pile of loot to get in there and sort it out. Both of these options seem extreme.

Can anyone shed any light on where the route cause of this might lie?
