If i made a manual reverse light switch, would that pass the test? Trying to find any excuse to avoid dropping the gearbox
A manual reverse light switch is fine on the following two conditions :

1. It must be marked as the reverse light switch

2. Either the switch should contain a warning light or there needs to be one somewhere to show the reverse lights are on.

Is the car manual or auto?

I just checked by going to the beginning of the thread, a 1992 car WILL have a Lambda sensor and a cat and the B230FK definitely does. Have a chat with Luke (360beast) or Mark (Griston64) as either of them are likely to have a photo of the bulkhead connector for the Lambda sensor. Yours being an early car will have a different sensor to the later ones they've broken but i'm fairly sure the connector is in the same place. Also using secondhand Lambda sensors is a false economy as they usually fail in short order, if they're not already dead from the shock of being removed.

It would explain your high idle as well as the ECU will have gone into Limp Mode, the Engine Management Light should be on as well which will be an MoT failure without even testing the CO. Depending how high the idle is, it may even fail on that part of the emissions test as it needs to be at a normal idle level.

On a manual car you just unclip electrical connection and unscrew the reverse light switch. Unless it's different on an earlier car M46/M47 to my M90

Default Reverse lights not MoT requirement

Reverse lights do not need to be working for MoT on your (or any years) of Volvo 940.

Don't say they've changed things on reverse lights in the MoT again!

Does the EML come on when you first turn the key to position 2?

If a 97 manual it will be an M90 so to change reverse light switch takes 15 mins

It might not be needed for an MOT but I would say it's a good thing to have to warn other drivers you are about to reverse

I was gonna say I crawled under the breaker yesterday when removing engine and box and worst case is you remove the gear stick with its linkages (two pins) and then you have more than enough room to change the reverse switch.

No need to do any of that Luke. Just up on ramps or whatever and unscrew it. It's a 5 min job

The 10 min part is jacking or putting on ramps
