Not much of a review as I only have my s80 with 2.0d about three months. As for now done about 4k So just clocked 137k. Engine is good even to compare to my old vectra with 2.0 petrol. Turbo is kicking in quite early but thats a good thing for me. In a combine drive (short runs to work and back, occasional motorway run) it returns around 42-44mpg( I'm not a racer and car is biiiig). On a motorway run (around 500 miles from edi to scarborough and back) returned around 54 mpg which is great for me(planning to take it across europe). As for it's reliability...time will tell. For now no problems. Just done a service on last tuesday. Oil, filter, new air filter and runs even smoother. It's Euro4 so dpf filter. As for engine itself just check some mondeo or peugeot forums as that's is a shared engine to all they cars(and i think was shortly put in a Jag)
not really a good idea because in other makes it seems to give all sorts of problems for various reasons , but in the volvo its well sorted now since 2007 , remember it first appeared in 2005 in the V50/S40 and since then volvo have ironed out the early problems .

I think I'll continue to watch, don't fancy changing wheels but your help is appreciated. After the feedback I may be able to find a older one under 10k and save some money, as long as its been well cared for. By all accounts the pre 07 d5 engine is great so it's an option to consider.

I'll give a quick update on my 59 reg 2.0d (Pre D3) 4 cyl.

It pulls okay (given the weight of the car) and isn't that rough at all in fact after my previous car (57 reg Audi A6 2.0TDi) it is positively smooth. I've had mine from new and has now done 59,000 in just over 2.5 yrs, probably 60% motorway. Fuel consumption averages about 42 on the dash computer (which is actually about 40.5 if you calculate it on fill ups) Best tank full ever was 45. Worst tank full was 36 and that was all short journeys/cold starts.

Has never used a drop of oil - goes in for service with the oil still on the max line (the audi needed 0.5l every tankful of diesel "that is within the normal range sir" say audi!)

I've not driven any of the 5 cylinder ones so can't compare.

I'd be more than happy to have another 2.0d but at my new employer I'll be stuck with the 1.6 drivE if I stay with V70
