Key stuck in dash! Help!
My key is currently stuck in the slot in the dash and won't release. This means that I cannot lock the car and anyone could drive off with it and my insurance probably won't be valid if they do!
When I press the key as normal for it to release it makes the usual whirring sound and moves out a little but doesn't release. I can push it back in and the car will start as normal but however many times I try it won't release. Luckily I've just got home from work so at least I'm on my driveway so I can keep an eye on the car. I'm still under warranty (just - 59,000 miles clocked over this morning!) and I've called out Volvo Assistance but just thought I'd see if anyone else knows any tricks to release the key. Edit: Just to confirm, mine is a manual gearbox so the various articles I've found through google that suggest that the auto transmission shifter lock button causes this problem won't apply to mine. I had this happen to my 2010 US S80 due to an electrical problem in the car. The guy on the Volvo service hotline told me to just pull it out. I did and everything was fine. It took a little force and felt wrong, but everything was just fine. YMMV

Well, the Volvo assistance guy came out and after a few attempts at gently teasing it out went for the brute force method and gave it a strong hard tug. It yielded and came out. It then seemed to work fine again. He has a rapport with the local dealer so rang them to tell them it was definitely faulty and needs to be replaced so I have it booked in for tomorrow (quickly before the warranty expires - less than 800 miles left!) It has started to play up again, needed a moderate pull and is now very notchy going in and coming out.
Can't praise the Volvo assistance service highly enough. Rang me every 15 minutes to advise updates on ETA, rang the dealer on my behalf to convince them it needed replacing. Great service - hope I don't need it again though! |
