Default Wheel Bearing noise ?

Got a new style 57 plate V70 D5.

2 problems with it at present , one has been diagnosed as being the a/c compressor bearings , expensive at £800 fitted , but hey.

The other noise sounds and feels like a wheel bearing well on its way.

Had it checked by the main dealer and they have stated it is not the wheel bearings and suggested it is nothing serious and they would leave as is ! Unfortunately I can't ignore this , something definitely isnt right.

I know this is wheel vicinity related as the noise and graunchy feel through the steering wheel adjust with wheel speed. It happens even when I coast in neutral so I think I have eliminated anything gearbox

Could it be a CV joint ?

I am at a loss as to what it could be ,what else is there ?

I suspected / discs rubbing on the guard but can see no trace

Have a read up on "sawtooth" wear on tyres. It's the only suggestion I've got beyond what you've already considered.

Also check the brake protecting plate.

This flimsy piece of metal can often get bent and may just be catching the brake disk and causing your symptoms. I would have expected Volvo to have picked that up if it is the case though.

If you think tyres may possibly be an issue then swap rear to front to see if it makes any difference. A few minutes work could save 100's of pounds (wheel bearing).

Thanks for the responses.

I even fitted a pair of new fronts yesterday just in case ,had to get the winter tyres off anyway so no problem , but no change in the noise.

My last V70, a 2005 D5 AWD, needed new wheel bearings just before the 3 yr warranty expired. Fortunately I had a friend who worked at a Volvo franchised dealer before scummy Stratstone took it over and he investigated the noise thoroughly, even changing the wrong wheel before doing the correct one.

Been told by 2 places now that the a/c bearings being on their way out could be cauising the noise through the power steering pump as it is on the same belt.

Biggest problem is the a/c compressor is on back order from Volvo .

Went in for the a/c compressor replacement today.

Much quieter and no judder through the power steering now , BUT after £816 there is still a noise.

Tempted to swap out a wheel bearing now

Hi, i have a 2007 v70 and the a/c compressor went on it about a month ago. Volvo covered the cost of it as it is a reported fault. You should get your dealer to check it out.

I had the same noise on mine too. But what happened me in the end was the the compressor seized and the belt shredded while on the motorway (Smoke pouring out of the engine bay). Got towed back to the dealer and they initially quoted me a similar price to replace the part but when they looked into it, it was covered by volvo. One difference is that i am in Ireland but generally the dealers in the UK are more on the ball with this sort of thing.
