XC90 safety
Since the Volvo XC90 went on sale in the UK in 2002 it has sold over 50,000 vehicles, yet not a single person has been killed while driving it, or as a passenger.

Hhhhmmmmm, not sure the article is completely accurate.
With the exception of BLIS, I don’t recall the mark 1 XC90 having any active safety systems. So really the research is saying that a traditional, passive-safety vehicle which sold x thousand vehicles between 2002 and 2014 is the safest car in terms of owner safety. Not sure that message fits with the rest of the content in that article !

I don't think the original statement of claim is invalidated by the article highlighting the importance of AEB
Rather it's making the point that the inclusion of AEB will no doubt enhance the safety record of the XC90. |

It's an amazing stat. I do wonder how much is down to the typical driving style of the typical XC90 driver though. We're hardly seen as a bunch of boy racers, are we?

It's such a comfortable place to be, my driving style has definitely relaxed somewhat since I got mine. Or, to put it another way, as my cousin did, I'm now a 'bloody Volvo driver'... |

Not a rewarding car to drive fast. It is bought for families mainly not so much as a show off, that makes people drive it safer. All kinds of reasons why this car has fewer and less severe accidents to start with. So the data is not really representative of xc90 being any safer than other cars. Ranking occupant injury severity divided by accident severity would be telling something useful about passive safety. Something like miles driven divided by log of speed (so fast driven cars are not penalised) divided by number of accidents times the severity would tell something about active safety. They have not a single point of data on which they are making conclusions - that’s just bad stats. They also box themselves in - first fatality - say a fire or head on crash both cars going 60 (everyone dies) - they have no record to talk of and these articles are all over Twitter destroying their reputation. Here is a good one - Tesla model Y is the safest car as it had not been in a single accident (not yet made) and it had not a single warranty claim (most realiable too).
