Issues with V50 Valve differences
Hi all,
I'm looking at a sick 2005 V50 tomorrow (Saturday) that has two leaking valves, I'm led to believe that the valve adjusting procedure is different in the white block as my 940 has hydraulic tappets. The car is for my wife and her colleague who is selling the car says she's not paying the £800 the garage have quoted for the repair. The engine is a 1.8 MW 545 petrol and l fear that the repair procedure be not so straight forward even though l can do the work.......taking into consideration the cam belt,Head bolts, cost of skim, etc The car is well presented @ 117,000 mls and the AA man has said if she sells it he will buy it!!....................any thoughts would be most welcome. Many thanks. Last edited by omc 47; May 6th, 2022 at 20:48. |

What makes you think it's a valve clearance issue? The 1.8 petrol engines are prone to problems with the piston rings but I've not heard of people having to set the valve clearances. What symptoms have you got and have you done a compression test?

Thanks for the response.
The car is in a garage where they've removed the head after a compression test showed failure. The reason for the question is l've had mixed messages on refurbishment of the head, some say the buckets are shimmed some say the buckets are non adjustable and the valve stem is ground for adjustment which l've not come across on older Volvo's and could work out more expensive................ Before visiting the garage l wanted to be armed with some knowledge of the issues.... |

I believe the 1.8 engine is just a rebadged Ford duratec/mazda L engine, which has removable tappets for valve gap adjustment.

Now for the truth,
seen the car and head is NOT removed just the cam cover. Chain drive Mazda engine with fixed buckets and no 1 plug melted due to being driven with a misfire. Decided not to buy as son has been using car for last fortnight so could now be a can of worms.........time to move on. |
