Default Soot coming from exhaust

I've recently purchased a 53 plate S60 D5 and have had a few minor problems. I'm using it for a weekly treck up and down the county (450 miles e/w) and this weekend on the way up I got the "ENGINE REQUIRES SERVICE" caption coming up. As I didn't have time this weekend I thought that it could wait until next week. On the way back down the motorway I noticed every time I put my foot down I am getting large clouds of smoke from the exhaust, this is the only time it happens. The car has only done 39k and has been electronically tuned last Nov. Please tell me that an oil change or some system cleaner will solve this problem and that I've not got a major engine rebuild expense facing me. The oil on the dip stick is black so it definately needs changed.

Hi..have you checked the large rubber pipe(intercooler) at the front of engine?...the symptoms you describe are very similar to what my cars suffered some time back..mainstealer sorted it our FOC as it was a known problem..

I wouldn't have thought its a major problem, but it is overfuelling on boost. A couple of points.

1. Oil in a diesel engine goes black very quickly so is not nescessarily an indicator that it needs servicing.

2. You say it was electronically tuned recently. Was this an upgrade tune? If so, then many of these cause extra smoke on heavy acceleration. If it wasn't and upgrade then I wonder what was tuned?

3. Old favourite is air filter. Is it clogged.

Cheers

Martin

Would tend to agree with S60. Mine too had the same symptoms, split 'charge air hose' and although my car was out of warranty, volvo sent it to me foc , as long as i sent the old one back.If not the hose, it could be a split intercooler. The symtoms are similar, but you also get oil around the bottom of the intercooler at the front. It's easy to have a look to check, then at least you can rule it out!

Thanks for that. I checked and there is a big hole in the lower hose from the intercooler. Contacted the nearest Volvo dealer and ordered the part to be collected tomorrow. I never even thought about enquiring how much they would charge to fit it, as it is out of warranty. The guy in the parts dept told me that this is a common problem and it looks like the upper hose has already been replaced. I might chance my arm and see how much they will charge to fit it tomorrow, but I wont be holding my breath as they quoted me £340 for the 36k mile service.

It all goes to show what poor quality standards that these newer Volvos are made to.

I personally feel sorry for the dealerships. I bet that they have never had so much warranty work.

Within 8 months of ownership of a lovely S60 D5 I have had almost £1000 worth of work done.

I wouldn't want to be a Technician in a modern dealership. Probably a proper Engineer and now he/she has to plug in a laptop.

There was nothing wrong with the good old 900 series - it told you the faults.

Would I buy another Volvo - a modern one vs the newer ones - NO !

Yes totally agree , I bought a v70 2.4 T for the skip runs as I use to have a volvo many years ago , a real work horse and unfortunatly this is not . I hate to say it but the 530 d knocks the socks off it , even worth putting up with looking like a dick head driving a bmw , would never of dreamed about it 5 years ago .

Off topic I know but I have to agree with the above about Volvo quality.
I was torn between BMW, Mercedes and Volvo this time...Next time it'll be between the Germans.
It's a sad day when the number one car manufacturer by volume is Japanese.
Fantastic people at taking an idea and developing/improving it but, my god, they have no idea with a blank piece of paper.
Give us a sports car ? OK, Celica, sporty body shape with Corolla underpinnings. Skyline ? PS2 on wheels with PS2 style bodywork (straight edges and ugly to look at).
It's all going horribly wrong for people who want more than turn key point to point metal !!!

I am glad that someone agrees with me.

Sorry that it doesn't help the soot problem.

I personally wish I had never bought a modern Volvo.

I have already had almost £1000 pounds worth of remedy work carried out under warranty.

And that on a 2002 D5 S60 with only 51K miles.

Give me back my 900 series which was built to last.

As far as your lower air hose is concerned,it is an easy job and you should be able to diy.Make sure you use new jubilee clips as sometimes the threads strip on the old ones when you tighten them up!
