Yes it is possible. I replaced mine on my R , it was worth changing full of grey gunge.
My rear diff was also black and nasty. Yet volvo recommend sealed for life ! Not a chance .

Thanks for that. Can you give a summary of the steps on how you got the filter out please as I would really like to mine. That input flange to the Haldex unit looks awfully large and in the way.

The filter is held by 2 torx bolts. T5 I think. The top bolt is not too bad to access. The way I did the bottom one was to cracked it with an 1/4 extension and then using the torx with long handled pliers turning it.
Not easy and time consuming but I prefered to do that than drop the exhaust and propshaft.
With the prop still connected there is not enough room for the bolt to come out using a socket and ratchet as the ratchet fouls the prop after a couple of turns hence the long handled pliers.
Not the most sophisticated way of doing it but it worked.

That's really useful thanks. I agree I would also prefer to do it with the prop in place and work round the difficult access. A few more questions:
Was there enough room to get the filter out ?
Did you clean and replace the filter, or fit a new one ?

Yes there is enough room for the filter to come out , just be prepared for fluid to come with it. Not a lot but you don't want it on you. I fitted a new genuine filter from volvo. It comes with a new end plate for the filter housing but I just reused the original one as the new one sticks out further so even less room to work in. I just couldn't get the bottom torx in with new end plate but I could with the original so I just reused it.
