Cool

From a review of the forum, there seems to be quite a few instances of the angle gear connector splines failing. When this happens you get similar symptoms as you have described with lost drive to the rear wheels, grinding and torque steer.

This seems to be on quite a few AWD models. Does anyone have any idea just how common this problem is ?. Other forums "sweedespeed" etc seem to suggest it will happen to many owners at sometime !.

Would it be worth keeping a log or xl spreadsheet to record the number of instances.

Mine failed at 90k miles. I wrote to Volvo asking if the part was of acceptable durability in view of some are reported to fail in 40 to 50k miles (and its a £43,000 car).

The reply from Volvo UK was less than helpful stating: "and has achieved over 90,000 miles, and the part in question has has lasted as long as it has, I do not feel the part can be deemed unfit for purpose". This was followed by a no help paragraph.

If it is a common problem, and there was a register listing all the failures of the same type, it might help other AWD owners who have the same problem in the future. A log showing the failure they are reporting was not an isolated incident may be helpful when trying to negotiate some assistance to fix.

Apart from the drive problem and the usual sat nav problems it has been a great car to own.
