Question Shift indicator light?

Hi all,

Question, do ALL manual 740 GL's have the S.I.L (shift indicator light?) I've read how it works but i've not seen it illuminate once, not that i have noticed, most of the time i accelerate up to 3000 in first gear, and 2000-2500 in the rest of the gears, however i have brought it up to 4000 ish to overtake, and not seen a S.I.L light..... just wondering.

I know now how to reprogramme the system but i'm not sure if my car has it...

Not all GL's would have them as different gearboxes are fitted.

I have a wiring diagram of the shift indicator circuit for 1984/1985 740s. Weren't they used with the M46 box?

Having looked at my diagrams again it would seem that the gearshift 'relay' is located in the middle row, second from the right (just to the left of the M46 overdrive relay). Check to see if you have this so-called 'relay'. The module is wired into the digital E-connection on the speedo (also used for cruise) and the tachometer. There is also a connection to the clutch pedal switch (present on cars with cruise control) but I don't know the purpose of this connection. The only other connections to the gearshift module are to the M46 overdrive relay, +12V, ground, and of course the up-arrow light on the dash.
