Default 740 Fuel tank breather system

After a run, for a few hours after parking up, i get an odor/whiff of petrol most noticably around the rear wheel arches, mainly from the side with the fuel filler door, i know the tank is situated on that side, but for fear of my petrol being able to evaporate off into the free air, (4 star isnt as cheap as it was)... is there a ventilation system on these cars or is it a case of a vapor release pipe venting fumes and tank pressure off to the atmosphere?

I belive there is a breather on the top of the tank, but can not remember, it was a while ago I had the tank out of the 740.

  1. There is a vent pipe with a rubber thing on the end, located somewhere between the left rear wheel and the diff.
  2. Check your fuel filler cap and see if pressurised vapour is released when unscrewed.
  3. Check your fuel lines for leaks.

only in really warm weather there is a slight hiss of pressure release upon removing the fuel cap....i noticed a rubber pipe coming down near the differential... about 7 or 8mm in total width... maybe that is is?

On mine the rubber thing is tapered, sort of conical. It's attached to the end of a metal pipe leading to the tank. It's behind the fuel tank somewhere. I can get to mine without jacking the car and sliding in from behind the LHR wheel.
