Default Help diagnosing unknown fault

So, this fault has been going on for a while now.
The first symptoms are pulsating power when at about 30mph. If this continues I get “anti-skid service required”
Then when in 5th gear going up a hill, at about 70mph it suddenly throws a tantrum and won’t rev above 3000rpm and looses speed.

This went away for a while after servicing (fuel filter, oil, oil filter etc) and is still throwing a code “EGR Valve something flow?” Even after changing to a euro car parts egr valve.

I have just given it a long run (600miles round trip) which hasn’t done anything to fix it, and also have tried the DPF cleaning additive to see if that would solve anything.

I am about to give up with this car, but I really don’t want to.

If anyone can help diagnose the issue, there is a case of beer in it for you!

Firstly what engine 1.6D, 2.0D, D5??

I would suggest getting it on a proper Volvo code reader. If it's the D5 then a faulty DPF or CAT temperature sensor can cause it not to rev over 3,000 RPM without any other warning lights or messages.

I'd also have a search on the forum about faulty injectors and anti-skid service message.

Sorry! I should’ve said, it’s the 1.6D!
I’m currently debating whether it’s worth just buying a VIDA reader, or paying Volvo to scan it for me (how much would this be roughly?)

If the anti skid warning doesn’t appear, it doesn’t limit the revs, but it’s down to luck if it does it or not (I think)

Would it be worth trying injector cleaner additive first? Or going straight to Volvo/buying a VIDA scanner?

I went to a Volvo Independent specialist near me, they have all the software and it cost £35 for a printout (and it got everything). Not sure about Volvo prices.

Got one of those 2 miles from me! I’ll give them a call tomorrow. Will it show up everything?

Depends what code reader they actually use.

My local dealer (Shrewsbury Volvo) charged me £50 +VAT last week for a diagnosis following a severe loss of power. They found the relevent fault codes, however my little £2.60 code reader also found these same codes while I was waiting for the recovery truck!

However your problem might be the ABS? In which case cheap, generic, engine code readers wouldn't see the stored code.

I decided not to get my car scanned by Volvo. They wanted £66 for the pleasure. I decided to by my own VIDA DICE scanner, and I will diagnose myself. I have a cheap scanner already. But it’s throwing a load of generic codes.

I’m interested to see what the proper reader is saying.

Also, if anyone is near Basingstoke and needs a free scan, let me know
