360 to 340 running gear swap?
Just out of interest (no intention of doing it myself) but I've been mulling it over for a couple of days and was wondering would it be possible to swap the entire gearbox and engine from a 360 into a 340?
Would the entire running gear would have to be swapped? |

Foggy runs a 360 setup in a 343 shell, so yes, it's doable.

The gearbox and diff can be retained although the front of the gearbox need changed to mate with the 360 propshaft and torque tube. You should also change over to the 360 centre/side diff mounts and cross beam. The 340 is held up by 4 points at the back, but changing to 360 gear you loose the front 2, and we recon the rear 2 are not strong enough.
You will possibly need 4 new threads in the chassis at the back for the cross beam. And maybe the threads for the 360 engine mounts in the chassis legs. The 360 engine and geabox is only held up at 4 points, compare to 8 on the 340. Make sure the 360 rear brackets are in good shape, they tend to corrode with Al on Fe, they are also handed (L/R). |

When I did it I just used the rear of the two 340 crossmembers and it was fine. If you have a 360 box, torque tube, engine it's a doddle except for fitting the engine mounts. You need to drill the chassis rails and either use nuts and bolts, or fit 'nutserts', like Foggy did.
It's easy though, so easy I'm about to do it again! |
