The B234F is a twin cam all the work done for you by volvo . only 155 bhp though as it is strangled as to not be more powerful than the B200FT ..

16v head does bolt on to a B200/230, you'll also need the crank gear/intermediate gear off the 16v as the 16V timing belt is wider than the 8v. The stock 16v head flows better than a big valve ported/polished 8v head, but the intake and exhaust manifolds are more restrictive. Still, an NA 16v 2.3 only produces 7 less horsepower than the turboed B230FT, so they must be doing something right.

Timing belt tensioner is a sticking point, on the 8v it bolts to the head and 16v it bolts to the block, so you end up with no timing belt tensioner. There's a Penta tensioner kit that bolts right up as the 16v head was used on the 8v block on the boats, but is is very expensive. I think a few of the US and Swedish performance companies to a tensioner kit using aftermarket parts.

The 16v head doesn't fit with a distributor on the block, Yoshifab in the US does cut-down distributors that work with the 16v head, but you can't install/remove one with the head on the block. Or you could go to wasted-spark ignition, or use a head-mounted dizzy.

The pistons need to be exchanged for 16v ones with flycuts for the valves (I don't even know if there are NA 16v 2.0 pistons? I think the 16v 2.0 was only ever a turbo, and very rare), or have the cuts made in them. I know there is a rental kit for doing this in the US.

Finally, on a RHD 240 at least, the cylinder head sits very close to the clutch master cylinder and there are packaging issues with the standard exhaust manifold. On a LHD 240, the throttle body is blocked by the brake booster so a slimmer one has to be fitted. I'm sure a 360 has its own fitment issues!

In the 360 you can keep the dizzy at the back of the head.

There was a B204F (NA 2.0 16v). The heads are different (unlike 530 8Vs, which are the same B200 vs B230). I suspect the valves in a B234 head might strike the edges of the bore on a B200...something to check with a head gasket.

Personally, I'd find a B230 bottom end, cut the valve reliefs (although it has now been proven that they're not actually needed, depending on cam spec) and bolt on a B234 head with a Penta tensioner (£££, but worth it for the hassle-free factor). Add throttle bodies and a tubular manifold (and a proper exhaust), and you should be easily north of 200bhp.

cheers

James

You want the one for an AQ171, which is a "normal" (i.e. 8v) block, mated to a 16v head. Oh, and it's a 2.5, too...with a stroker crank.

It is...but it's still a lot cheaper than a big-valve 530! A T5'd 360 would be a joy...I'd do that, honestly. The only reason I'm not is that the B230 turbo is such a neat swap it's rude not to. If I was in the mood for another 360...!

cheers

James
