Default New Subwoofer Fitted

Just had a subwoofer fitted into the back of our 2010 XC90 Exec - It's made a real difference!

Many thanks to Peter (Elliott2) for his hard work, very professional service, came to my house 140 miles away and did the job in two hours. Much cheaper than the local car audio place even after paying for mileage!

The sub is discretely hidden away in the rear nearside quarter panel, and the seperate volume control is in the little storage pocket there. It connects to its own amplifier and gets its signal from the front amp in the car under the front seat.

Highly recommended!

That's where the sub-woofer on the old Premium Sound system was installed in my D5 SE, before Volvo removed it from the "New" (but decidedly unimproved) Premium Sound setup.

It's a disgrace that the new Executive model should be fitted with a system inferior to that fitted in the old SE model.

Must be something to do with the weight and co2 stuff. you cant have a spare if you have a sunroof and all that so things like extra amps and subs add extra . I changed my wing mirror and the motors were metal encased and the new one was plastic and a lot lighter. ?

Is there any visible grill etc?

If the sub is in the side panel, it must need some means of escaping to the cabin....

Hi, no grill, no. It just works! The bass frequencies are just transmitted via the rear quarter plastics. It doesn't buzz or anything, just solid bass. Also I believe there was some extra wadding placed between the back of the sub and the out sound insulation of the metal rear wing to stop any unwanted vibration.

Cost £340 including mileage for a 240 mile round trip.

No grille or speaker cover over the sub-woofer in my 2003 SE either - it just worked. My son really misses it in my new Exec - can't understand why Volvo took it out of the Premium Sound spec., 'cos now it isn't really any more "premium" than the basic setup (I know it has more speakers, but the word should refer to quality of sound, which the sub-woofer certainly enhanced).

The cost for fitting this single speaker to an existing system seems quite high to me (who has no idea about these things anyway), but perhaps the mileage charge accounts for much of it?

As I understand it the amplifier on the premium system is 5 channel, therefore one of these should be the base woofer on a Dolby 5.1 system. It seems to me that only the speaker and possibly wiring needs fitting to complete the system. Some one out there must know more?
