Default Help Please. Quirky S80 Issue

Hi,
I have a 2000 (W) S80 2.4 Petrol Auto.
It drives (rather drove) a sweet as a nut until last week.
It suddenly decided to cough and splutter, then stop.
When I restarted it, it the engine was constantly revving up and down (hunting)
I left it alone.
When i returned about 2-3 hours later it was fine.
Until about a day later when it did exactly the same again.

I borrowed a friends code reader, which threw up more codes than I think is possible. I disconnected the battery and did it again ....... nothing no codes detected and the car was again as sweet as a nut.

Up until now I have checked and cleaned the injectors, checked the coils and removed and cleaned the VVT Actuator, all to no avail.

The car still goes into stupid mode every couple of days and I have to disconnect and reconnect the battery to clear it and be on my way.

I have taken it to a Volvo specialist (I use that term lightly) when it was playing up, and what they did was code read it and then proceed to quote me for rectifying every code, saying that the car was very poorly, and giving me a quotation for circa £2000 + LOL

I am convinced that this is nothing more than a silly, little electrical issue (I hope) anyway, as the car runs superbly when it is on it.

Can any of you Volvo gurus throw any light on the potential cause of the problem and reassure me that my old faithful is not going to sting me for thousands of pounds. It only cost me £1200 to buy.

Thankyou very much in advance.

Incidentally, one common denominator from the code reads, was that when viewing the live statistic data, the Fuel System displays an 'OPEN LOOP SYSTEM FAILURE' message when playing up as opposed to a 'CLOSED LOOP' message when running OK. Don't know if this will have any bearing on your answers, but thought I would mention it.

It could be as simple as a failed MAF sensor that it located by your air box. Or it could be time for a new ETM which is significantly expensive.

Posting the actual codes would help:

Guess failing ETM.
