I looked for a dip stick today whilst poking around under the bonnet. I guess from reading this thread that Volvo don't fit a dip stick anymore? I do loathe electronic oil level measuring.

I miss having a temperature, oil pressure and voltage gauge.

They tell you a lot about what is going on under the bonnet without having to get your hands dirty and as others have said they look great.

I am sure that if someone made them we would buy them.

How do you know it's warmed up enough to give it the beans?
This might work for you http://www.lemurmonitors.com/index3....aLiFOFV7AFbA.2 I don't know any more about it than what is advertised. On one of the Forums where I found it they did say that each additional item over and above the basic items on the scanning tool has to be bought separately so can make it expensive in the long run.

Yes my 911 had all the instruments one needed but then it was from 1978 - an era when cars had a stack of instrumentation.

PS. There will be a "mechanics" dipstick located down the front of the engine, not certain exactly where but there was thread about it some time ago.

Thanks for that link. I may have to get one of those or indeed something similar. The car will be my wife's daily transport and I doubt she will notice it isn't fitted with a temperature gauge but I drive it on longer journeys so it would be nice to have then.
I do mourn the lack of instruments on modern cars. Volts and oil pressure were always very good indicators of issues developing. Forwards into the modern age I guess, with one eye still wanting to check things like we used to do.....

Thumbs up

Hi Volvothusiasts
I also miss my temp gauge. I have, mentioned before, Torque pro app for my Note 3 and it works perfect. Invested in cheap bluetooth adapter for obd port and paired up gives You all the info You need. Also can check and reset fault codes. Gives you shed load of options if You need them. It a PITA to set up the way You want but after that there is no hassle.
Hope this helps

Regards
Luk

Gave the car it's maiden voyage last night. 200 miles at a mix of motorway jam and 80/90 and it was fine. 35 mpg on the computer but I still can't feel comfortable without knowing what the temperature of the engine was. I guess familiarity will lessen the discomfort I'm feeling.

My 2012 model year V70 D3 doesn't have a temp guage or proper dipstick and like most people I miss both. Don't buy the 'you don't need it' explaination. However, over the winter on cold mornings I was getting a very, very brief flash of a warning light under braking, too brief to focus on and identify. On a particularly cold (for we pampered southerners) morning I braked hard and up came the message "low coolant level". Didn't know I had that and can't find it in the handbook. It only took .5 of a litre to top up the header tank.

Oh it is all there working away in the background , when it deviates from normal you will soon know about it , there is a comprehensive monitoring system , and the electronic gauge for oil level is extremeley accurate, it can differentiate between an egg cup full of oil ... but whilst all is well they choose to show more important information in the limited space on the display .

I agree, I always take (before I ordered an S80) a glance at the guages when driving, maybe once every half minute just in case.
